Sample Music Concert Reviews
On December 10th at 7pm, I tried attended a concert at the Center for Music & Worship Arts. The room 160 was big enough to hold a full orchestra, but it was canceled so I had to attend another one.
The one I attended was at Towns Alumni Lecture Hall. The concert, or the service was at 7 pm. The title of the concert was called A Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, and it was a sixth annual service sponsored by Liberty University School of Music. The director was Dr. John Hugo and the Liberty University Concert Choir was singing for the night. The service lasted about an hour.
The service traced the story of incarnation through songs and the words from the Bible. Including one soprano soloist, Corinn Keene, there were twenty-one Sopranos, twelve Altos, seven

Ellen Black. The choir sang The Angel Gabriel from God arranged by John Hugo without accompaniment. Interestingly, the song started with a major key and then concluded with a minor key. Same melody was repeated, and it seemed like the song uses Church modes. The song was about the angel Gabriel saluting the Virgin Mary, thus it had a solemn mood.
St. Luke tells of the birth of Jesus
The Sixth Lesson was about Luke 2:1,3-7 read by Dr. Rick Raspberry. The choir sang Glory to God in the Highest by Randall Thompson. The climax of the song had ascending melodic motion, as the lyric was “in the highest”. Then, the pitch suddenly dropped and the key became a minor and sounded little bit darker. Also, the articulation sounded very staccato which means that each notes had short duration. But the note became longer when the key was minor.
The shepherds go to the manger
The Seventh Lesson is Luke 2:8-16 read by Dr. Terry Spohn. The choir sang Rise up, Shepherd, and Follow arranged by John Hugo. The hymn was using 11.7.11.7 hymn meter. It was interesting that the tempo was various.

The next selection of music that was sung was the piece “Festival Sanctus”. Originally intended for a SATB choir the piece was modified to fit the ensemble. A sacred piece written in Latin and adding to the feel the piece is also in a minor key. With a syncopated and bouncy rhythm the song lifted the spirits of all in the auditorium. The voices blended and seemed as if there was one big person singing…

Overall, I enjoyed my attendance at the concert choir held at Benedictine University. The show was well done and I could tell that the members of the choir worked very hard in preparation. Although there were eight songs, the concert went by fairly quick. There was only one baby grand piano in the middle of the stage, but other than that, it was interesting to see that no other instruments were used except for their own voices and they were able to project an excellent performance for the…

Over the course of the semester, the Chorale has sung a combination of Disney and Christmas themed songs for their fall and winter concert. Such songs include God Help the Outcasts arranged by Audrey Snyder, When You Believe arranged by Audrey Snyder, and Carol of the Bells arranged by Kirby Shaw. Each one of these pieces contains its own rich history and meaning behind the lyrics, of which date back to the original composer and his or her inspiration.…

The worship leader was the presiding priest, but he did not seem to be very much involved with the music, so I asked the choir director about the music. He told me that the music liturgy committee guides him in the selection with a lot of input from the choir and parishioners. He also explained that the Catholic services follow a liturgical calendar. We are currently in Ordinary Time and will soon enter Advent.…

For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program. The concert program ran smoothly as the ensemble band transitioned gradually to each different song piece. In addition the scenery added to the peaceful presence during the show. Since the concert took place in the lobby of the music hall, people saw the bright lights coming from the ceiling and they also enjoyed to majestic surrounding of the large glass windows. The Wind Ensemble concert event was a smoothing time to reflect on…

The concert that I attended at Yale University on November eighteenth was called Symphonie Fantastique. During the concert, the band played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, William Tell Overture, and Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique. The music was excellent and played with much expertise. Each piece was performed well. I enjoyed listening to the extravagant music with very few mistakes.…

The concert I attended was Franz Joseph Haydn’s Paukenmesse (also known as Missa in Tempore Belli, Mass in Time of War, or Kettledrum Mass) in a choral composition with piano accompaniment. It was performed by the West Village Chorale members and conducted by Gwen Toth. Being a vocal arrangement, the piece featured a standard SATB format. The songs included were Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei.…

The performance of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Ebenezer Baptist Church was amazing. The performance taught me that there is a difference between listening to an orchestra play on TV versus watching them life. the life experiencing will always stick to your memory because you were actually there to experience the feeling. I really enjoyed it. The show made me enjoy and appreciate classical music. It was en experiencing I will never forget. from the seating arrangements to knowing the appropriate time to clap. it was awesome. The four piece program was conducted by Thomas Wilkins. Violist Drew Forde and violinist Gareth Johnson were among the spotlights in the program. The venue was a great place to perform at because the sound was so mellow and you could clearly hear everything that was played. The timing of the event was at night which was great too because the types of music the band played were the kinds you would most likely hear or listen to at night time except for one.…

I was unable to attend either of the two symphony orchestra concerts this semester due to my busy schedule as a rugby player, however, I had attended a symphony orchestra concert last Fall semester with my girlfriend for her St. Josephs College music class at the Stony Brook University Staller Center. I was hesitant to use this experience as it was slightly over a year ago and I fear that I may have forgotten certain important details. I can still remember certain key elements from the concert and the impact it had upon myself. I have also spoken to another friend that recently attended a Stony Brook University symphony orchestra concert in order to stimulate any dormant and preconscious thoughts I may have had in my head of my own experience.…
