Story Theory is a middle-range theory put forward by Mary Jane Smith and Patricia Liehr in 1999. They believe that stories are an essential part of nursing practice. They believe that stories are just as important to diagnose and treat as the physiologic bodily responses of the patient. In fact, often it is the stories that clarify and give meaning to the measurements of physiologic response. Smith and Liehr posit that all nursing encounters take place within the framework of a story.…

My duty as a nurse is to promote good and do no harm and respect the patient as the most basic and universal principle. According to the code, my most fundamental accountability is to the patient. In addition, it is my duty to make the most wise and ethical decisions for what is best for the organization. As a leader, I am self-aware of my values and basic beliefs about the rights, duties and goals of human beings. Unfortunately, here utilitarianism of what is best for the common good outweighs what is best for the individual. Mr. Cole has the right to leave against medical advice and it saddens me the issues they may face being denied home health care, however, it is not justified to withhold information from the physician. I could be risking…

I believe that implementing strategies to promote, maintain, and restore health is key to the nursing career; the main goal of nursing is to improve an individual’s health. In my clinical experience, it’s to maintain the individual’s health issues or diseases. An example of using teaching/learning principles is when taking a resident’s blood glucose a family member asked me what the normal range for blood glucose is. I explained that a blood glucose level between 70-100mg/dL is desired. Then I went on to explain that based of the resident’s blood glucose levels a certain amount of insulin will be administered. I also taught the family member that insulin is a hormone that helps the cells take in glucose; which results in the cell using glucose as energy and a decrease in blood sugar…

During my childhood my teachers would always ask me “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Without giving it much thought I would always say a teacher or a chef. As I got older I realized what I really wanted to be when I grew up. I became interested in becoming a nurse when I was around 12. My aunt, who is a nurse would always tell me stories about her patients and what was going on at the hospital she worked at. During my sophomore year I was privileged enough to job shadow my aunt’s friend Jana. It was a great, rewarding experience.…

My mom taught me to live by the Golden Rule; do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I have lived by this rule all my life. I have never had a problem getting along with others and treating them with respect until I started my nursing career as an LPN. I started working at the local hospital, working night shift. I really enjoyed going into work, helping the patients with their needs. I enjoyed visiting with them and finding out what would make their stay better. Then one day the supervising nurse in charge of the floor took me aside and told me to stop visiting with the patients. I was thinking to myself okay there has got to be a good reason behind this. She told me the patients need their sleep and they don’t need me to visit with them and keep them awake.…

I had my second day of school nursing, and it was awesome; such a busy day. I got to assist with a semi emergency, where the child’s knee locked up and he wasn’t able to walk; he calls it “pancake knee”. I had the opportunity to recheck children that failed either or both parts of the hearing vision screening, as well as, got to be one of the main people to assess children that came in sick. Brenda allowed me to do the assessments as she knows I love the practice; practice makes perfect. Going back to the semi-emergency, where the child had “pancake knee”; I demonstrated developmentally appropriate care on this 3rd grader through this scary and painful experience. Brenda and I were called into class, which was extremely chaotic; this child…
