In Amy Lonetree’s book, Decolonizing Museums: Representing Native America in National and Tribal Museums, analyzes Native American museums and how they interpret the difficult history of colonization in American museums. Why, according to Abram, are conversations about immigration important in the context of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum?…
My recent visit to the Norton Simon Museum was very different than any previous experience I have had with modern art. With only a semester's worth of knowledge under my belt, I was most definitely in awe, and thoroughly entertained, to say the least. Although inspired by many, I chose to analyze two works with very similar subject matter, by two German Expressionist artists. I compared a piece entitled, "Bathing Girls", painted by Franz Marc, to the similarly titled "Bathers Beneath Trees"; a work by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.…
It was the first retrospective to present the wide-ranging work of the Chicano performance and conceptual art group Asco (Jenks, 2003). Asco (1972-1987) commenced as a tight-knit core group of artist from East Los Angels composed of Harry Gamboa Jr., Gronk, Willie Herron, and Pitassi Valdez. Taking their denomination from the forceful Spanish word for disgust and nausea (Jenks, 2003). Asco used performance, public art, and multimedia to respond to convivial and political turbulence in Los Angels and beyond. Asco remained active until the mid-1980s, contracting and expanding to include Diane Gamboa, Sean Carrilo, Daniel J. Martinez and Teddy Sandoval among others (Dieking, 1998).…
During this on-campus event I went to the Sacramento History Museum. The Sacramento History Museum is the place where I purchased my membership for this class. The Sacramento history Museum is in downtown old Sacramento. In addition, the lens of history Presented by Dr. Cohen will be used to analyze the Sacramento History Museum (Cohen, 2015). In the Sacramento history Museum an observer can see primary and secondary sources.…
The name El Teatro Chicano is actually a blanket term used to describe an entire theatrical movement by the Mexican-American population in the United States. Established in 1965, Luis Valdez’s El Teatro Campesino (literally, Farmworkers’ Theatre) was the most famous of the Chicano Theatres; however it was hardly the only participant within the movement. In 1971 there were over 25 groups that defined themselves as Chicano Theatres (Huerta 15). The basic guidelines of El Teatro Chicano were simply to be a community-based movement committed to exposing social issues…
Whether it be through restaurants that serve as taquerias or grocery stores with Spanish words, the effect of the Hispanic culture can obviously be seen throughout the street’s businesses. This culture effect can be seen not only in the culinary aspect but also in the designs and layouts of the businesses. This can range from Spanish words being included into the name of a business to flags representing the Mexican country being hung outside of the establishment. Each of these examples reflect an overall Hispanic culture and show a clear picture that Mexican immigrants in America share a certain bond with each other that has resulted in an established culture here that can remind them of home but also thrive economically in the Fort Worth area. The numerous restaurant and grocery areas provide this currently and will continue to do so through their products and…
From visiting the California mission of San Fernando museum was really great experience I had a tour guide that was showing me all the great and important history of the California mission. The museum that I went was called “Mission San Fernando, Rey De España”. I learnt that this museum is a pictorial history, which I found so many religious pictures and also some clothes of the saints. I found so many pictures, icons and some workshops that it was all about Christianity religion, I found also a big church that looked like a catholic and when I went I found there was like a wedding there inside the church which was the “Old Mission Church” a church inside a museum was a weird thing because I see it as a first time in my life a church and…
The Brooklyn Museum’s view of the portrait shows eighteenth-century mixed-race colonial elite of the island of Dominica in the West Indies. When first seeing this painting you can see the fine detail of how it was painted. Brunias was sure to pay attention to detail of clothings and face and yet still keep in mind the body language in which everyone was protrayed. The two women are shown accompanied by their mother and their children, along with eight African servants, as they walk on the grounds of a sugar plantation, one of the agricultural estates that were Dominica's chief source of wealth . Brunias documented colonial women of color as privileged and prosperous. The two wealthy sisters are distinguished from their mother and servants…

In this response paper I seek to analyze the ethical, legal, and museological issues that surround the Teotihuacan Mural Gallery from the de Young Museum. The gallery is inside the Art of Americas section of the museum on the ground floor. A simple room, the Teotihuacan Mural Gallery is a dim lit space dim lit space that has large mural fragments along the walls, a bench in the center of the room, and a display stand featuring small fragment pieces. A placard on the wall pays respect and expresses gratitude to Harald Wagner, a Pre-Colombian art collector who gifted the collection to the de Young Museum and mentions the great efforts put into displaying these Mexican national treasurers.…
Going to this exhibit showed me that people really do care about the world. There are not many people in society that care enough to voice their opinion, or go out of their way to try to make the world a better place. Yoko Ono is a rare and very inspiring person.…
I caught the faint laughter of the museum inhabitants and the shuffle of their feet, but other than that, I walked around the Metropolitan Museum in silence. The statues looked ethereal and stoic, the clay figures reminded me of a paused TV, but I was searching for something that I could hear. I strolled up to Gao Keming’s handscroll “Stream and Mountains under Fresh Snow” and the painting was more than what you could catch at a first glance. I caught the sound of a rushing steam, the stuffed crunch of snow being mated by footsteps, and silence of a different kind. It was the silence of nature that I usually head back home, and the echoing of my eardrum searching for noise, only hearing the muffled incoherent clamor from someplace far. I…
