Sandra Cisneros is a Mexican-American writer who is world famous for her short stories and narrative writing. As reflected in some of her works, Cisneros’s art and literature was influenced by her childhood and heritage. Her novels, short stories, and even poems can almost be considered primary resources of her and her family's experiences during her childhood. Aspects such as heritage, poverty, machismo, or simply being the only daughter out of 6 men molded Sandra’s writing to what it is now.
Sandra’s heritage is rich in culture. With her father being from Mexico City, Mexico, mother’s family from Ganuajuato, Mexico, and being raised in Chicago, she was able to inherit a little bit of 2 Mexican
worlds while still trying to pursue the American dream. With so much complexity in her culture, she often found herself confused on her identity. It is in Mexican culture for the only way a daughter leaves her father’s house is by marriage. However, growing up in the U.S allowed her to go a different route than a traditional Mexican daughter. She sought individualism, creativity, and passion for literature, allowing her to escape the threshold that she was born into.
Being the only daughter of six men discouraged Sandra of being able to pursue her dream. There were rather “machista” aspects of Mexican tradition that expected less of Sandra. For example, she was only able to leave her parents house by marriage. She was to stay home and help her mother with cooking and household chores that would prepare her for marriage. Her childhood was different though. Sandra’s early childhood involved lots of moving around, new schools and having to make new friends very often.
Her path towards becoming a writer began in 1966 when Sandra was eleven that her family moved to their first actual home. Although she grew up poor, her parents did the best they could to have a roof over the family’s heads and food on the table. They sometimes had parties for graduations and birthdays but nothing too special. She played and conspired with her brothers and friends like any other child in an urban neighborhood would. However she was able to capture the beauty of those short years and put them on paper.
Each and every aspect of her life and her minds way of functioning slowly molded her into the artist she was today. Many people might share experiences in their childhood with the one’s Sandra writes about. However someone who is destined to capture and record those childhood moments through art and grace to be able to making those experiences immortal by being able to put them on pen and paper make them last forever.
