Introduction
A windshield survey of a San Juan Capistrano community in the zip code area of 92675 (see Figure 1, Appendix) was performed to get a sense of neighborhood characteristics and to assess the area for opportunities to improve the health of the community (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012). There was a focus on the Los Rios Street neighborhood (see Figure 2, Appendix) in the central part of the city where a high number of low-income Hispanics/Latinos live (United States Census Bureau [U.S. Census Bureau], 2012).
Statistical Information
The city of San Jun Capistrano had an estimated population of 35,123 on 2011. The females made up 50.4 % of the total population, slightly higher than males. Two thirds of the people that live in the city were 18 years of age and older. The following ethic groups made up the population in San Juan Capistrano in 2010: Whites (not Hispanics) – 55.8%, Blacks – 0.6%, Asian – 2.8%, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander – 0.1%, Hispanics/Latinos – 38.7%, and two or more races – 3.5% (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012).
From 2006 to 2009, U.S. Census Bureau estimated the following population statistics for people aged 25 in San Juan Capistrano: 82.9% graduated high school, and 36.7% had a bachelor’s degree or higher compared with California statistics which showed 80.7% and 30.1%, respectively. In 2009, 43.4% of Hispanic/Latino in Orange County had educational level of less than a high school diploma and is the main reason that they are employed in lower positions. Last year, half of the population in San Juan Capistrano, 16 years and older were employed while only 5.9% were unemployed. Thirty-nine percent work in management, business, science, and arts occupation followed by 24.1% employed in the service industry.
