The old man that said this quote approached Santiago, who was sitting and reading a book, and started a conversation with him. The conversation started with the old man asking Santiago what the people in the village were doing, then Santiago gave the man wine to help quench his thirst. Finally, the elderly man asked Santiago about the book he was reading. The man inspected the book and found it irritating, it was the same as every other book and it always ended up with everyone believing the one greatest lie in the world. This sparked something inside Santiago that started his journey. When the old man told Santiago the world's greatest lie, he did not believe it applied to him and wanted to prove the man wrong. When I was twelve my father and mother separated, and I felt as if there was no hope left in the world because my own parents couldn’t stay together. I believed I could stop them from getting a divorce and I tried my hardest to. I started to believe the world’s greatest lie. I couldn’t control this one event in my life, which tore me up inside. However, I knew that it was written and fate just pursued the plot of my life story. After a few years, I learned that I could not control my father leaving; however, I was in control of the ability to make myself stronger and better, for I had learned from my father’s mistake. He may have left the family but, in the end, I did not believe the world’s greatest lie. I did not let fate crush me, I built myself back up and made myself stronger. I controlled what happened to me after my father walked out, and that is what made me who I am
