In literary, the QUEST primarily has five main aspects. These aspects include (1) a quester,
(2) a place to go, (3) a stated reason to go there, (4) challenges and trials en route, and (5) a real reason to go there.
The QUEST in The Alchemist:
1) The quester: Santiago, a young shepherd, who is determined, curious, and insightful, and wants to bring riches back to his family to justify his decision of becoming a shepherd over a priest.
2) A place to go: Santiago needs to travel from Andalusia(Spain) to Egypt, but has little resources, escalating the problems he encounters and delaying his travels. More importantly, Santiago meets thought provoking and spiritual characters, who direct him away from his original destination.
3)A stated reason to go there: Santiago wants to go to the pyramids in Egypt, because he had a dream that lead him to believing that they house great riches and treasures.

It also foreshadows an event or revelation that might occur in a literary work, as well, making it a great strategy to deepen the effect of a story. An example of this is in Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None.In the story, after all the guests arrive at Soldier Island a storm comes increasing the suspense and doubt which was existent before it came. The development of the storm was also important in representing the growing danger the guests were beginning to face after the first murder of Anthony Marston. Another example of weather's importance in literature is in Homer’s Odyssey , when as a seastorm and whirlpool emerge as Odysseus was on his way back home. The storm was symbolizing replenishment, as Odysseus wasn't free of sin on his journey
