Author Study: Writing Style

I recently had the chance to interview the author of Pretty Little Liars, Sara Shepard. This book is a part of a series that has been made into a hit TV show on ABC Family. Together they all try to figure out who the killer is while they receive anonymous text messages and emails from “A.” Whoever is behind “A” knows all of the girls’ secrets and uses them as blackmail. Shepard relates this story to her imagination and games from when she and her sister were young. She also relates it to similar experiences and people from when she was in high school. Luckily enough, I was able to be one of the first ones to question Shepard about her new successful book, Pretty Little Liars.

Who are the main characters and where does the story take place?

She was known as the most popular girl in high school who was acted like a snob and always got her way. Ali was the leader of her group of friends until she disappeared. One year later, her body is discovered and this brings her friends back together to find her murderer. I would say if it were not for her, then the story would never really be able to begin. The other main characters are Ali’s friends who come together in order to find some answers. They are

Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, Hanna Marin, and Emily Fields. Spencer is the intelligent out of the group. She is super jealous of her older sister Melissa, which causes them to compete on everything related to school grades. Aria had moved to Iceland the year Ali went missing but eventually moves back. She also ends up falling in love with her AP English teacher and is seen as the weird one in the group. Emily is the top swimmer at their school and is a tomboy. Little does everyone know that

I have accomplished a great deal in the past three months. As the semester ends I find myself reflecting not only on how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. Writing is hard work. There is so much more to it than just writing an interesting story. I also learned another important lesson; just because I worked hard on an essay before presenting it and reviewed the daylights out of it did not mean it was ready for submission. Every time I went back to read it I found new changes, typos and other mistakes I had missed before.…
