• Gadwal is a small town in Andhra
Pradesh which is around 150 km away from its capital city
Hyderabad.
• Gadwal sarees are famous for their fascinating cotton field with heavy silk border and pallu.
• It is a common belief that brocading abilities of many weavers in Gadwal originated from Banaras where a local Maharaja send their ancestors to learn weaving skills.
• Gadwal and Kothakota developed their own style due to the patonage received by the royal family of
Gadwal And Wanaparthy.
• It is a three shuttle saree.
• Earlier pure silk versions of the saree also existed usally in bright contrasting colours.
• Gadwal sarees are usually woven with weft borders of contrasting colours which are interlocked with the main saree.
• These sarees are worn by local women during religious or festive purpose. RAW MATERIALS
• The body of the saree is woven using unbleached cotton yarn and contains patterns made up of coloured cotton or silk yarn.
• The border is made up of either
Tussar silk or Mulberry silk.
• Pallu and border is done using threads coated with gold or copper. MOTIFS AND COLOURS

The richly brocaded sarees were woven in silk with contrasting pallu and border carrying distinctive patterns, influenced by the tradition of stone and wood curving 's of that area.

The “Hansa” or the mythical swan, combined with carvings tendrils was an important border pattern. •
“Youli”, the stylized Lion ,and the double headed eagle were the other important motifs used in the pallu. •
The motifs of the ”Murrugan” (peacock) and therudraksh rule as the favorite along with the “Temple motif” (Kutabham or Kotakomma). Other variations include mango design buttis all over body enriched by a dark contrast color pallu having intricate geometric pattern zari design or self stripes design in body with zari buttis all over the saree field.
