Example 2: The second example of satire is from chapter 17, when Huck stays with the Grangerfords in this chapter they mention how much they hate the Shepherdson’s; this may be a satire about how much society hates God’s children, because Jesus is our shepherd and Christians are His children therefore making all Christians the Shepherd’s children. The characters in “Rip Van Winkle” are exaggerated and strange. For the most part, Irving uses Rip Van Winkle & Dame Van Winkle to show exaggeration in the characters. People in their town view Rip Van Winkle as someone who is friendly & loves to help everyone. His wife, Dame Van Winkle, only saw him as being lazy due to Rip not doing much work around his house. Dame Van Winkle spends most of her time in this story criticizing him and Rip just “….shrugged his shoulders, shook his head, cast up his eyes, but said nothing.” To get away from his wife’s nagging, Rip chooses to go up to the Catskill Mountains with his dog. Dame Van Winkle…

“Rip Van Winkle” and “The Devil and Tom Walker” are both written by Washington Irving and feature a man living with his wife. Each story depicts their wives in a similar fashion; vicious, pestering annoyances that contribute little to nothing towards the well-being of the protagonist. Irving’s general scorn towards women is manifested in a few different ways, even looking beyond their blatantly negative descriptions.…

What in the heck do you mean? Isn’t that a use of satire one might ask? Satire is saying one thing and meaning another. It is a perfect example of irony. Irony can be seen in our everyday lives and is greatly used throughout comedy and poetry. Especially in the old poetry. Satire can also be seen as a slightly different version of sarcasm depending on how it is used in context. There is a great deal of satire in any aspect of life if you choose to look hard enough. It is used mostly by women, once one does their research well enough. Women like to use it when they are talking to their men and accusing them of something and they decide to try…

Many characters in Washington Irving's original text, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", are markedly changed to suit many different versions of the story. By comparing and contrasting the character Ichabod Crane in the original Washington Irving text and Tim Burton's 1999 film, "Sleepy Hollow", both characters' influence on the audience may be analyzed. Through literary techniques and production elements, the characterization of Ichabod's physical appearance, beliefs and personality including his love for Katrina can be used to influence the response of the audience. Although both versions of Ichabod Crane are different, they are also similar in many ways. Through certain appearances, beliefs and behaviors, the audience is positioned to see Ichabod…

In “Rip Van Winkle” by Washington Irving, Irving's portrayal of Dame Van Winkle is not fair because Rip helps everyone except Dame, Rip always avoids being around her, and Rip is very lazy. In the story Rip will help everyone except Dame. Rip would help other people with tasks such as go shopping for them because they would thank him and make him feel good. He would also just do things for people to avoid doing work and helping her around the house so she would get mad at him. Rip would avoid Dame at all costs in the story. Rip would go hunting or hang out at the hotel with the other guys to avoid her. He would also do things for other people and get away from town when he could to keep from get a very “angry reminder” to do his work form…

After reading Wshington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle" I believe his point was merely to show how the American Revoultion changed one small village and gender issues, and shows the comical relationship between a lazy and careless husband and an over-domineering wife. It was written to be a political symbolism and historical alusion of colonial life under British rule to the democracy of the young United States, before and after the American Revoulutionary War.…
