Satire on Reading an Article
The article “Girl Moved To Tears By ‘Of Mice and Men’ Cliffs Notes” from The Onion is a satirical passage criticizing students and the way they read assigned novels; by not actually reading it but by looking at someone else’s notes on it. The literary element of satire uses irony, sarcasm, parody, hyperbole, or other methods of ridicule and humor that criticizes, but also attempts to improve human institutions or human follies. In this article, the use of situational irony is used to support the satire by making it appear as if the character, Grace Weaver, has actually read the book but in reality has not. The way that Weaver reacts to the cliffs notes about Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck, one would usually expect that she read through the novel and not only understood it but connected to it. However, Weaver did not read the novel at all and only read through cliffs notes of it. In the article Weaver says “I’m also going to find that book about rabbits that George was always reading to Lennie, so that I can really understand that important allusion.” The irony in this statement that Weaver makes is extremely evident to the whole satirical aspect of this article. Weaver wants to learn more about the story; to get more in depth, but the option of actually reading the novel isn’t there in her mind. She thinks of other things to do to get a better understanding of the book, but the best option she doesn’t think of; reading the book. Weaver’s professor says in the article after knowing that Weaver chose to read cliffs notes instead of the novel, “I look forward to skimming her essay on the importance of following your dreams and randomly assigning it a grade.” This quote shows that Weaver is not, necessarily, going to get a good grade on the assignment because she never actually read through the book and so doesn’t really know what it’s about. The satire of the article criticizes the way students choose to do book projects, but then attempts to reform that folly by

One last technique the author uses to keep the reader’s attention is situational irony. Situational irony is when something entirely different than intended happens. Situational irony holds the reader’s attention by making a plot twist more entertaining. “‘We try to be civilized here.’ ‘Civilized? And you shoot down men?’”(75). This quote shows situational irony because General Zaroff is saying he’s civilized, but he hunts down men.…

In Chapter 26 of Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor, he explains that any great literary work is dripping with irony. At first glance, a reader may not see the it, but a closer look at a book like Kate Chopin’s The Awakening will make a reader snicker at all the irony that comes to light. In The Awakening, the relationship between protagonist, Edna, and her husband is ironic. As Edna is approaching, sunburned, he looks at his wife “as one looks at a valuable piece of property which has suffered some damage” (Chopin, 7). Mr. Pontellier feels as though he owns his wife, but throughout the book she ignores his opinions, has affairs, and eventually leaves him. The relationship with her husband is not the only ironic one Edna has; she has a love hate relationship with her children. Trying to appease her “mother woman” friend, Adele, Edna says, “I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn’t give myself” (Chopin, 80). However, Edna’s death was very selfish because instead of saving her children, she took away their mother. Edna’s death was Chopin’s great irony in The Awakening. At the end of the book, Edna wades, into the sea, purposefully, until “it [is] too late; the shore [is] far behind her, and her strength [is] gone” (Chopin, 190). Edna’s great awakening, her realization of freedom and self, leads to her suicide. Once a reader is trained to look for irony, she will never stop seeing it, adding depth and humor to the reading…

Obesity is a major epidemic in America. American’s are known for their obsession with food. At church last Sunday, the pastor was preaching on the topic of “fasting”. Fasting would be defined as the abstinence from eating certain or all foods in an effort to rely solely on God for inner strength. The pastor talked about how we as Americans are constantly looking for our next meal. We are always anticipating when and what we are going to eat. We even schedule our entire days around mealtime. Americans are essentially obsessed with food. In an effort to change this aspect of our culture, I have devised a three-part plan.…

Recently, cigarettes have been getting a bad rap. No one seems to understand that the real problem at hand is not the negative effects of smoking cigarettes, but those who abstain from smoking cigarettes. These people are nothing but a nuisance, a lousy bunch of no-gooders that just want to ruin your fun. In fact, smoking cigarettes is an activity that the entire population can benefit from. The world relies on the production and consumption of tobacco, and there are many positives of smoking that outweigh the negatives. For example, smokers dedicate a large portion of their life buying packs upon packs of cigarettes, which in turn gives a huge profit to the country. Surely if you consider yourself a patriot, you would take up smoking cigarettes. These non-smokers are the exact opposite, and will remind you of the risks of cancer and other diseases from smoking; but no one truly wants to live forever, and if you smoke, you won’t have to. You will also most likely notice how unpopular and unattractive these non-smokers are compared to those who smoke. It’s a well known fact that smoking makes people look better, as it gives people a rebellious, non-conformist persona. So, taking everything into account, you should smoke because it increases the wealth of the economy, it helps end an otherwise meaningless life, and you’ll look cool doing it.…

Today’s society is faced with the continually growing problem of electronics and social media. What used to be considered a precious treasure is now the cause of teenage obesity, lack of concentration, inadequate communication, and above all a far less intellectual society. Cell phones, internet, video games, television all have taken over the youth in society and corrupted them into unimaginative, unqualified, dull robots. Facebook is merely a tool to drain the intelligence from teenagers until they are forced to speak in instant messaging jargon- LOL, OMG, TTYL.…

Homelessness has been an issue of much dispute throughout time, regardless of whether it is in present day Portland, Maine or in the ancient city of Rome, Italy. People have been trying to aid the wanderers for a very long time, but clearly, have never found a good solution to the problem. People are sick and tired of walking out of their door in the morning and finding a vagrant, still reeking of alcohol which they purchased with a good Samaritan’s donation, on their stoop. The people fortunate enough to have a home and a good job should not have to suffer when they walk down the street past hobos begging for a few dollars. It is not fair that the wealthy have to interact with the dregs of society on a daily basis. This problem has to be dealt with. That is why I propose that our society is in much need of the program, Clean Up The Streets (CUTS). The program resolves many different aspects of the issue . If the homeless are sent to landfills to collect cardboard and other material in which they can build their own houses with, this gets them out of sight of the wealthy. In addition to removing the homeless from our lives, it also aids the environment. With this new program, hobos are given a job in which they remove materials from landfills which they can then use to build shelters with. Yearly, Americans throw away 30.9 tons of good food; this will make wasteful people feel as if they are actually helping people when they throw away unappreciated food. This also means that there will be plenty of food for the newly housed and employed people. Also, about $1 billion dollars worth of medicine is thrown out each year, so illness will be quelled as well. The new CUTS program is flawless; it resolves the issues of…
