Satter Eating Competence Model Paper
1. There are four categories of the Satter Eating Competence Model; eating attitudes, food acceptance, internal regulation, and contextual skills. How people view food is important in eating attitudes. Dieters tend to feel guilty after eating food they labeled as bad food and putting themselves in a vicious cycle between restrict and binge. Solution suggested in the article was quit dieting and enjoy foods even foods for the soul. For better food acceptance, it is necessary to try new foods and eat variety so that more nutrients could be obtained. Keeping in touch with yourself is important for internal regulation. Dieters tend to listen to external cues such as time, social, and knowledge rather than internal cues of hunger and fullness, which are more vital. The article suggested some tips for each category, which all seem to be helpful. In the first category, the most meaningful tip for me was body acceptance. Give full permission to enjoy food and don’t feel guilty about eating, which can help people to love their bodies. In the second category, try different ways to prepare that food. Even though the same ingredients are used, the taste can be very different depending on cooking methods. Thus, to eat healthy ingredients deliciously it is effective to learn few ways to cook different. In the third category, get to know your own personal hunger and fullness signals is important. The internal cues are often disregarded for several reasons these days and I also follow external cues more than internal cues. However, following internal cues has more possibility to satisfy with the body and enjoy foods, so I would try to care more about it. In fourth category, expand your list of favorites. When developing cooking skills or planning what to eat, it is more likely to chose from my favorites. By expanding my favorites, it can help eating various types of food with more types of nutrients
