Is it not very strange to hear that the largest oil exporter in the world suffers of the unemployment problem? Well, 43 percent of Saudi universities graduates are unemployed (The Peninsula Times). The Saudi government tried to help to prevent and solve this problem by launching “Saudization” in 1971, to give Saudies the opportunity to work and to prove their selves, their skills and their abilities, but unfortunately that does not worked the way it has to. So, the causes of the problem are the educational system, the labor system and the foreign workers.
The first cause of the unemployment problem in Saudi Arabia is the educational system. Some studies shows a sharp increase in the population in Saudi Arabia to the available jobs, and that gives and turns the alarm to what is happening. Education systems in the Saudi universities are failing in preparing the youth to sweep into the market place. Where it offers a lot of majors that it is not going to improve neither the society nor the culture, such as, Geography, History and Arabic/English Literature. These are some examples on the majors that I can learn about by reading and searching. But also there are some people graduating in Science, engineering and medicine, which is very good, but not covered by the labor market’s needs. So, there is a big mismatch between the number of graduates from public institutions and the needs of the labor market. That is one major reason for unemployment, but not the only one.
The second reason of the unemployment problem in Saudi Arabia is the labor system. It is very old and it needs to be modified to merge with modern developments, it also has a lot of gaps as well.
