Save as Many as You Ruin
A short story by Simon Van Booy
Every person will throughout their life have a lot of different experiences, and acquire a lot of different memories. Some of them might be good and some might be bad but it is for certain that a lot of them will stay with us for a long time. An experience can be ruined when it is actually happening and then it will turn in to a bad memory, but if you keep this bad memory within, you will be able to learn from it, and it will become a lesson on what to do next time. It will make you grow.
In the short story “Save as Many as You Ruin”, by Simon Van Booy, we meet the main character, Gerard. Gerard has experienced a lot through his life, and although a lot of his memories are bad he keeps them within and remembers them. Gerard has only felt love for one woman in his life, although he has been to bed with many. The reason for him sleeping with so many women, but only really feeling love for one, could be him being promiscuous. When he finds a women whom he actually loves he still feels this urge and lust to be with other women. “Gerard vaguely remembers the feeling of being in love with Laurel and the desire to have sex with Issy.” (p. 5, l.123-124) Even though Gerard loves Laurel he can not hold down his desire of having sex with Issy. He does not control his lust – it controls him.
There are two women presented in the short story. Both of them have had very different impacts on Gerard. Gerard does not realize that he actually is a lot like Issy in some ways. When Gerard told Issy that he was falling in love with Laurel Issy's first reaction was laughter, but then she started crying and told him that she was pregnant. This is an example of a contrast between her feelings, and just as Gerard she does not know how to control them.
The other woman is Laurel. When Gerard is with Laurel he feels real love, not just a desire to have sex, as he feels with Issy. With Laurel it is different, he
