Save the Girl Child
“Save the Girl Child” It is said that god created mothers because he could not be present everywhere. It is unbelieveable to realize that a god's representative is countinuously killing someone beautiful even before she can come out and see the beauty of nature.

In older days the birth of a girl child was considered as auspicious. As per an Indian proverb, "A home without a daughter is like a body without soul". The birth of a daughter in the house was compared with the advent of Goddess Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth and Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of Kno

Six decades after the country's independence, and during the 21st century Female foeticide still continues in India. Women constitute half of the population in India, meaning half of the population has been deprived of its self-respect and subjugated into its grim existence. Infant mortality in India remains higher than that of males. The percentage of girls enrolled in schools is 49% compared to 73% of boys, and the percentage of employed women has dropped from 71% to 41%. Crimes against women have also increased. More than 4,000 cases of rape were reported per year, approximately fourteen rape crimes a day, which is equivalent to one or two rape crimes every hour. Females are usually looked down on by their parents, some might even kill their own daughter or continue to reproduce until one of them is male.…

India from centuries has never welcomed the birth of daughter. Indian culture either treats woman as a goddess or an object, pretentiously as goddess but actually as an object. Daughters were never welcome as is evident from the blessings given by Rishis – “Ashta Putra Saubhagyavati Bhava” – “Be a Mother of 8 sons” – the blessing was never for 4 sons and 4 daughters.…

No matter how much we deny it, the truth remains that the women of our society experience the same problems that the women in the Arab world do. One may argue and say that India is developing and moving forward and women are no longer treated as inferiors but is this really the case? Aren’t we forming our opinion based on how we, as individuals, are treated? Look at the millions of women in the villages. Those women face the cruelty of the male dominance till date. Female feticide, infanticide, premature marriages, honor killings, the practice of ‘sati’ are common sights in the villages of our country. One of the increasing atrocities against women is that of rape. Every single day tens of women in our country are raped and there is very little that the system is doing to protect the women against these crimes. It is nauseating to read about how brutally the women are treated for no fault of…

Despite the clear prohibitions against child-murder by all major religions, female infanticide has been for centuries a prominent and socially acceptable event, notably in one of the most populous countries in this world, India. Even today, the extent of the problem is measured in alarming proportions all around the globe: "at least 60 million females in Asia are missing and feared dead, victims of nothing more than their sex. Worldwide, research suggests, the number of missing females may top 100 million." The data is more astounding in India. According to the Census Report of 2001, for every 1000 males the number of females has decreased to 927 in 2001 from 945 in 1991 and continues to decrease. It is clear that the burdensome costs involved with the raising of a girl, eventually providing her an appropriate marriage dowry, was the single most important factor in allowing social acceptance of the murder at birth in India. Nonetheless, in addition to the dowry system, the reasons for this increasing trend have also been attributed to the patriarchal society, poverty and the availability of sex-selective abortion.…

Women’s education allows these women to become less likely to be prone to sexual abuse, and more likely to encourage other girls to obtain an education. These young girls are being shipped off as child brides before they are ever allowed a chance for education. Girls who learn how to read and write often have a higher life expectancy, a higher chance of using birth control and a greater chance of not becoming child brides due to their devotion to their studies. It is important to educate girls to continue a cycle of female empowerment because without which, many of these girls are prone to abuse, both physical and sexual and need education to rise above it. Sadly, value on girls in some third world countries is significantly less than other places in the world. In third world countries, especially those dominated by a religious backing, such as the Iraq and Afghanistan, women enjoy even less freedom than they do in the United States. Lack of proper care for girls who have reached the age of 12 and over is a huge factor as to absences in schools, and often a girl falls too far behind due to this, and drops out as a result. These issues are more prevalent…

Imagine a world with no women. There as no wives, no sisters, no daughters, and no mothers. Unfortunately this world is on the brink of becoming a scary reality for Asian countries such as China and India. Due to attempts to control population and the low value associated with females in these societies historically and culturally, both China and India are now facing a serious gender imbalance. Female infanticide and sex-selective abortion are responsible for this gender imbalance. The two atrocious practices have led to problems such as elevated rates in female kidnapping and slave trade, as well as forced marriages. This paper will focus on the roots of female infanticide and sex-selective abortions as well as the problems these practices have presented.…

My maid Parveen says, since day one, everybody she meets from her in-laws to her companions who live nearby; pray for her un-born baby to be a BOY!! Her mother-in-law claimed to distribute sweets in the entire neighbourhood if the baby was a BOY!!. When Parveen told me about these wired stories, I was really astonished. But what really annoyed me the most was HER OWN statement, “Baji, please pray that God blesses me with a SON!” I asked her for an explanation and she told me that a son would carry on the family name, become the bread-earner, and look after her when she grows old. “Girls are a burden. One has to pay for their upkeep, food, clothing and education and above all to her get married and contribute to another household. If one has a daughter, he/she would most likely have to pay a substantial dowry to get her married.”…
