Sayana McLeish November 10, 2014 Prof Liff RDG 101 “The Telephone,” by ANWAR F. ACCAWI In “The Telephone,” Accawi tells of his childhood in the town of Magdaluna. A small town where they had no concept of time and just lived by the days. He described the setting of where the story had taken place-which creates the felling of something real. The village of Magdaluna was overcome by the telephone. The villagers did not have much, and technology was very new to them. They judged time by certain events that happened. For example, an earthquake, or the birth of an important person would be sufficient to get a feel of time concepts. The children would play in the streets and run errands for the grown-ups for small sums of money. Though Accawi was content with his life the telephone ruined it shortly after it was invented. This change was surely a bad thing to him because he had fun without all the advantages of technology. He assumed everyone else was happy as well without the telephone. However, when the telephone came, it changed their lives forever. On the other hand, the telephone brought so many opportunities for the villagers. The whole village would sit by the phone and wait for it to ring and bring them news, and opportunities to make money. Thereafter the people of Magdaluna almost started worshiping the phone. The crowd around the phone started growing larger and larger. Once they receive new job opportunities they would leave the village. This was upsetting to a lot of people in Magdaluna, but, more importantly Accawi. He felt that it was disturbing their way of living, and taking them away from a life that they enjoyed. Also, Accawi described Im Kaleem as not being a

She called the Houston Police Department after committing this evil act who arrived at the scene and took Yates in custody and questioned her. People commit murder for many reasons, whether it is out of anger, love, jealousy, pure rage, etc., but why is it that we never speak of those who just seem more inclined to the extreme emotion, or lack of, that can lead to murder? In fact, “Approximately 1 in 25 adults in the U.S.—10 million, or 4.2%—experiences a serious mental illness in a given year that substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities.” (Mental Health by the Numbers) Based on the statistics, a decent chunk of Americans are burdened with a serious mental illness (S.M.I.), but not all of those who are impacted take the next step to get help.…

judge would do this by writing general warrants, which allowed general search and seizure to happen. Massachusetts wrote a law in 1756 that banned these warrants, because tax collectors were abusing their powers by searching the colonists’ homes for illegal goods. These general warrants allowed any messenger or officer to search a suspected place without any evidence. It also allowed them to seize people without even saying what they did wrong or showing evidence of their wrongdoings. Virginia also banned the use of general warrants later due to other fears. Then on December 15,1791 the Fourth Amendment was added into the Bill of Rights…

Louis Nowra has used black comedy within Cosi to allow the audience to abandon their pre-conceptions of ‘mad’ people and to see the characters not for their illness but for their personality. Because of this the audience is able to relate to each character and their situation and realise the underlying sadness of the patients’ lives. Each character brings their own experiences and personalities into the play which creates the audience to perceive characters differently. One of the most obvious perceptions of some characters in the play is the sympathy and pity they invoke through their characters development. The character Roy, who suffers from manic depression, creates sympathy from the audience due to his tragic childhood and consent rejection from society and even the ‘insane’. Julie is also another character who’s also perceived as tragic. Julie is a patient in the asylum due to drug dependency which ultimately causes her death after the play has finished.…

    Maria Matinez

I really enjoyed watching the Maria Martinez short film. Prior to this movie, I never really thought about what the Natives and people back in history used to make pottery. After watching this film, I learned how creative the Native Americans actually were. I found the method that Maria used to make pottery very interesting. It was very cool to see her gather her own clay from nature and mix it with red and white sand. She then poured water into a pool of clay and wedged it together very delicately. It was so fascinating to see how Maria and her son fired their pottery. As they stacked their ceramic pieces in a pit, they used metal to trap the air and keep the heat in. This complicated process looked so easy to Maria and her brother. They had to use intensive care when dealing with the firing, and it was always a gamble for them on how their pots would turn out. I was very surprised when their red clay pots turned black after the firing. You could just tell how experienced the two of them were and how passionate they both felt about ceramics. Maria took great pride in the spirits and was always thanking them. She looked to nature for help and always found her tools in the environment. She is very creative when it comes to decorating and uses so many unique techniques. At age 85, it is very impressive to see Maria kneeled down on the ground and kneading her clay so quickly. She is extremely gifted in the arts and has a true talent for making pottery. I thought it was very interesting when she told us that she did not learn how to make clay form her mother, it was her aunt instead that taught and influenced her. I think it is very neat how Maria did not have much schooling and her pottery today is so famous and sold for millions of dollars.…
