Abstract (summary)
Officials say the bank is ahead on its CBS programme as over 7,500 branches out of its 13,000-plus branches are being brought under CBS. The bank when it had launched the CBS project in '02 had initially targeted 3,000 branches by the end of three years.
In '02 the bank had decided to migrate from its distributed IT system which ran on a branch solution
Bankmaster to a centralised core banking solution provided by an Australian company FNS. Insiders say there is no instance of a bank centralising transactions across 13,000 branches.
Given the sheer scale of SBI there have been hiccups. Incidentally, for its international operations SBI has opted for a different CBS package known as Finacle.
