Scandium is the 21st element on the periodic table. This element can be located in the 4th period 3rd . The symbol for Scandium is Sc on the periodic table. Scandium is used for and is in many things. For example it is used to help grow crops such as corn, peas, and other seed grown plants. There are many protons and neutrons in Scandium. There are 21 protons, 24 neutrons, and 21 electrons. Scandium is also used in tracking devices. Scandium was discovered in Sweden 1879, by Lars Fredrick Nilson. Scandium was discovered when attempting to produce a sample of pure ytterbium from 10 kilograms of minerals. Scandium can be obtained from the minerals thortveitite and wiikite. This can still be obtained as a byproduct of refraining uranium. Scandium
has a classification as a metal. Scandium is a very soft, silvery transition which occurs in rare minerals from Scandinavia. When Scandium is hit by air it turns a yellowish, pinkish color. Scandium can be tarnished and can or will burn easily when ignited. It can react with to water. When reacted to water it forms hydrogen gas. This gas can be dissolved in many acids. To create pure Scandium you need to heat scandium fluoride and calcium metal. Scandium is used in a lot of things we use today. Some things we use but most we don’t. Scandium is used in a lot of sports equipment. Scandium is used in aluminum-scandium alloys for aerospace industries. Scandium is also used in bicycle frames, fishing rods, baseball caps, and other equipment. Scandium is used for a lot of things that are useful. They can help farmers a lot. They help farmers by helping them grow crops like peas, corn, and other seed grown crops. Scandium iodide is used mercury vapor lamps. Scandium does not react with 1:1 mixture nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid. In terms of Earth’s crust, Scandium is not particularly rare. Scandium is on the 50th most common element on earth.
