Task 1 – Quotes: 1) “But the point which drew all eyes, and, as it were, transfigured the wearer, - so that both men and women, who had been familiarly acquainted with Hester Prynne, were now impressed as if they beheld her for the first time, - was that SCARLET LETTER, so fantastically embroidered and illuminated upon her bosom” (51).
This quote perfectly describes the Scarlet Letter and how it will be affecting Hester for the remainder of her life. Her punishment (to wear the letter “A” on her breast) will always create stares of judgment, wonder, and disgrace. This quote caught my attention because the scarlet letter must be something so interesting that people who Hester knew were looking at her like they were just seeing her for the first time. 2) “In our nature, however, there is a provision, alike …show more content…
This quote describes a major part of Hester’s character. She is realizing that she has to except her punishment and rise above it. She will have to go on with her live enduring the stares and laughs, but she is going to accept the struggle and live her life. 5) “To Hester Prynne it might have been a mode of expressing, and therefore soothing, the passion of her life” (77).
This quote caught my attention because it makes me feel somewhat sorry for Hester. She is using sewing to try and calm herself during her punishment. It reminds me of having an “outlet” in life. Something that you can do and while doing it you forget about everything wrong in your life. 6) “Could they be other than the insidious whispers of the bad angel, who would fain have persuaded the struggling woman, as yet only half his victim, that the outward guise of purity was but a lie, and that, if truth were everywhere to be shown, a scarlet letter would blaze forth on many a bosom besides Hester Prynne’s?”
