The main characters from the book, The Scarlet Letter, and the play, The Crucible, can be closely related. John Proctor (The Crucible) and Arthur Dimmesdale (The Scarlet Letter) share very similar character traits and the storyline emphasizes these traits. John Proctor was a farmer and highly respected townsman who lived outside of town with his wife, Elizabeth. Arthur Dimmesdale was a well respected reverend. Both of these characters shared a hidden sin, adultery. Both characters lived in the same time period but very different eras. This was a time period where religion had a huge influence on the government and acts such as Adultery were illegal. Firstly the diversity in the society is amazing from Arthur 's society to John 's society. It is clear that each was a Puritan society set in the 1600s in Salem, Massachusetts. It is very noticeable, however, that in The Crucible, everyone is strictly Puritan, and one would even be criticized if he or she were not. In The Scarlet Letter, most of the people are Puritan, yet if one was not, whatever religious affiliations they had were not looked down upon or criticized. There were actually seemingly curious about other religions.…

“The Crucible” has a similar plot line to the “Red scare”, due to how mass hysteria is spread so quickly over false accusations. In “The Crucible” witchcraft is highly frowned upon, they even killed twenty people over it. Salem was a highly religious town, but the young people of the town were not so much. Several girls got caught by Reverend Paris in the woods dancing.…

The story The Crucible takes place during the times of the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts. This was a time of much hypocrisy in the people of the town of Salem. Many people believed anything they heard or saw. Although The Crucible is fictitious, the story depicts the historical information of the Salem witch trials, and blends them with fictitious characters with minds of their own to create a very realistic plot and conflict in this story. This story has a few themes that are shown through the actions and the thoughts of the characters. One theme that I felt had an impact on the outcome of the story is Fear and suspicion can produce hysteria which results in the destruction and breakdown of the people. The thesis of the story is shown by people's actions people can become suspicious of one thing and this leads to an uprising in the town and the people.…

One way that Crucible and Scarlet Letter are so similar, is that of their settings. Both Crucible and Scarlet Letter are set in Massachusetts around the 1600-1700 time period. The Scarlet Letter is set in a time period in which the sins taught by the Puritans were just as important and weighted as the demands of the law. Similarly, Crucible is set during a time that the sin of witchcraft was not only punishable on religious grounds, but lawful as well. During this time period, the Salem witch trials were roaring. In an excerpt from Douglas Linder’s The Witchcraft Trials in Salem: A Commentary, it is said, “From June…
