Schizophrenia is a mental illness where the individual is unable to determine what is reality and what is not. John Nash is diagnosed with schizophrenia, he sees people that he believes are there, that are actually hallucinations fabricated by his mind to help deal with the stress he is under. His mind became dependent on them and it started to affect him. Schizophrenia has no cure and the doctors said that he would have to be on pills for the rest of his life. John needed help for his friends and family, especially his wife, to overcome these hallucinations. As amazing as the human mind is, there are still times where is needs help. Alicia knew that if John did not want to try that he would be sent to the doctor where they would keep him away from the others. He would have a much better chance of getting better if he was with people and with someone that he trusted. Alicia figured that if John is willing to accept her help, and the help of his friends, he would be able to get better. As his mind became less dependent of these hallucinations he starts to return to his regular life. During this process, his hallucinations are still there, but yet they rarely approach John. This is demonstrated during the Nobel Ceremony near the end of the movie, where his hallucinations are at the end of the hall a great distance away. Showing how much his mind has been able to mend itself from such a major problem. His mind does not need them, but yet his mind cannot heal from the years of hallucinating.
