BCSB Scholarship Essay

My name is Ajito Odolla and I am currently a senior at Patterson High School. My family is from Ethiopia, we had a poor educational background. There were not any schools available in our village. When we were in Ethiopia, my Father was a farmer and I was a goat herder. I was too busy taking care of my father’s goats every day to learn another language. My native language is Anuak. On December 13, 2003, more than four-hundred people in my tribe were killed by the Ethiopian Government and my family had to leave Ethiopia and went to Kenya where we became Refugees for six years. In Kenya, I learned a little English in the refugee camp. After six years, my family got an opportunity to come to America. When I got here, I immediately started at Patterson High School. When I was in 10th grade, I had trouble choosing my career, but gradually decided that I want to become a nurse in order to help people. After high school, I plan to go to college and major in nursing. I need this scholarship to help me pay for college because my family’s income is too low; they cannot pay for my college. I deserve this scholarship because I know that I will work hard to achieve my goals. Because I had no education for most of my life, I am very appreciative of education and extremely motivated to learn as much as I can. I deserve this scholarship because I have worked very hard in school to make up for lost time, having earned a 3.16 GPA here at Patterson so far. My parents did not go to school and would be very proud to see me studying hard in college. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship.
