Richard Rodriguez is a great example of what it is like to be part of the students who belong to the schooled category. These past few weeks in class, I have found myself really questioning my own understanding of education. The article “The Achievement of Desire” by Richard Rodriguez has showed me that people have very different experiences with their education. Rodriguez describes himself as a child: successful, a scholar, eager to learn, and the perfect student. He also describes his changes as he continues to grow in his academics. He surpasses his parents in intelligence and soon realizes that he is becoming so different than them that they can’t even hold a conversation. First, when I look at the authors push to get an education I see in Richard Rodriguez’s essay that he was very motivated. He started as a young boy with an accent striving to learn more and attain knowledge whenever he could because he knew of the benefits. In the story Rodriguez says that he shifted away from family life to study more and learn more from his teachers. He wanted school rather than his uneducated family. In contrast, Mike Rose clearly didn’t want to be in school, he wanted an easy way out of things. The book, Ain’t No Makin’ It, allows us to enter the world of two distinct peer groups in a low income housing project in America. Jay MacLeod takes us on a journey to explain why the attitudes, beliefs, expectations, and aspirations of these two groups of teenagers differ so greatly despite their similarities. One of the primary focuses is on education and the Hallway Hangers and Brothers experiences within Lincoln High School. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child are important documents whose intention is to guarantee basic rights to all people, including children, regardless of where they live in the world. Both documents unequivocally state that education is an important and fundamental right for all. After reading this book, it is my belief that the United States falls short in fulfilling the educational rights set forth in these important declarations. The Brothers and Hallway Hangers were not granted an education that promoted tolerance, encouraged attendance, or provided equity in their education.…

In the US there is an unfortunate reality that exists among low-income K-12 public schools. This national tragedy is the failure to teach children of poor families the necessary skills to make it in the real world. Samuel Casey Carter’s No Excuses, states that roughly 20 million lower than average income children exist in the K-12 public school system. Of this number, 12 million are not learning the most fundamental skills (1). After reading the short story “My Boy Life” which is the memoir of John Carroll, I was from time to time envious of Carroll’s life but also relieved that I was not born in the 1800’s. Born just before the war of 1812 in Upper Canada, Carroll’s life was very simple. His prospective future occupations only consisted of a few and were predetermined from birth. How simple is life when everything is already set in stone? From the age of twelve to seventeen, Carroll worked at a tannery and as a currier. Carroll’s job was associated with his father’s work, his father being a saddler and harness-maker. Only grinding the bark in the tannery, Carroll’s life was consistent and did not require much effort of having to plan out his future. Sadly, much has changed and the current world does not allow me to walk a single, straight-forward path. With so many choices to be made, the world is more complex and much harder to survive in. I spend hours thinking of my future and what I want to be to no avail. To have our futures determined for us sometimes feels much better than having to choose between thousands of different paths we are able to take. Carroll is also not weighed down by expectations to complete schoolwork. In the century that Carroll lived in, education was not held in the highest regard. Children usually helped out with menial work in their house or assisted their father with errands having to do with the trade. This was because living through each and every day was much more troublesome and all the help was needed to keep food on their tables. On the contrary, I struggle with the sheer amount of homework and tests. It also adds to the tension when competing against all my peers for a better mark, which ultimately results in a better occupation. Education and poverty is a difficult subject to explore. Many views are held when it comes to the value of education for the underprivileged and whether or not it is the key to removing an individual from an impoverished condition. “The Social Animal”, a book by David Brooks, explores this subject of poverty and education through the life of one of his characters named Erica. Erica comes from an ethnic background, from a broken home, born from parents who did not receive higher educations, and can be considered an underprivileged child. Brooks focuses on the changes Erica goes through in her life from elementary school, all the way to adulthood, and highlights the fact that she was able to attend a prep school dedicated to giving impoverished children a chance at getting a college degree in hopes of changing the life of the student, as well as her families. People who come from low income families should be given the chance to receive a higher education so they can have a chance to break the poverty cycle by teaching them about self-control, discipline, organization and social communication.…
