Scholarship Essay
My name is Kinsey Bates and I am the second in my family to attend college, but the struggles of being a college student are very new to me. My mother is a single parent of three kids, and is watching two of us go through college at the same time. She doesn’t have a degree higher than a high school diploma and works very diligently as a secretary for a plumbing shop, and is very supportive of all three of her kids. I’m diving into everything head first as a college student, working 36 hours a week as an overnight Wal-Mart associate, and going to school full time. It’s a lot of work and is very overwhelming at times but I’m very determined to better my life by getting myself a great career. My goal is to be a Pharmacy Technician as a primary, and when I’m done with classes, certified, and have a solid job as a Pharmacy Tech., I want to go back to school for interior design so I can have my steady career in place, and then have a hobby that I can get paid to do.

I unfortunately haven’t had an opportunity to volunteer as much as I’d like to, but I’m currently in my first internship at a pharmacy. I did start working at a very young age however. When I was 14 I started working at my local nursing home as a Dietary Aide. I loved being able to help the elderly by giving them their food and drinks at dinnertime and I helped keep track of how much they ate so we could make sure they were actually eating and staying as healthy as possible.

Since I was a little bit older and didn’t have all my parental help as most students at a younger age do, I don’t have time to be in any other activities while I’m in college, because I have to work to make my living. Having to work so hard for my goals though, helps me push myself to do the best I can in every aspect. I have gotten financial aid through FAFSA, and it was based on my own income. Even with me working as much as I do, I don’t feel I get near enough money to pay for all of my expenses. I have to do a lot of driving to and from school since I live 30 minutes away from the nearest campus and an hour and a half from the campus I need to go to for my Pharmacy classes, then having to travel to go to my internship. Getting this Scholarship would help support my gas bill mostly so I can put my paycheck from work to my other bills.

I would ask that the scholarship committee would please consider my application as I feel I am doing all that I can and it’s not quite enough. I know that once I finish my degree as a Pharmacy Technician I will exceed at my job as I try to do in everything in my life. While earning more I can finally get things caught up where I need them to be to have the best life I can make for myself. Thank you for your consideration.

Throughout my school years, I have always wanted to help in the community and make an impact to others therefore when entering my freshman year, I joined many different clubs but one stood out to me which was Key Club assists students in carrying out its mission to serve the children of the world. In the club, we do many acts of service in their communities, such as cleaning up parks, collecting clothing and organizing food drives. We also learn leadership skills by running meetings, planning projects and more so. It provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership. One thing that impacted me from doing community work was the Eliminate Project which is a campaign to raise $110 million to eliminate…

Everyone knows the intersection on Hoover and Jefferson. It’s where students and faculty and neighbors of the community for a moment in time all come together. That intersection represents not only ones entrance and exit from the “USC bubble,” but provides a moment of realization that there is life beyond the classrooms, the books, and even the 2 mile “Fruber” radius around USC. See USC, provides the opportunity for one to reach their goals, to take their dreams and make them a reality. However, sometimes it takes a whole community and a 30 second traffic light to get you where you need to go.…
