We are having a Spring break Camp at the Lincoln park Community Center starting April 10th-13th from 9-3pm. I was wondering if you can come out and show our camp kids what the K-9 unit is about.…
How does one man defy the Supreme Court? After losing the battle of whether the integration of Little Rock could happen, Governor Orval Faubus did not want to give up. He decided that he would not continue to integrate, and instead, he would close Little Rock’s public high schools. Through closing the Little Rock schools, Governor Faubus inadvertently changed the Civil Rights Movement.…
Transitioning from a Catholic grade school to a public school high school was not an easy task, especially after recovering from a concussion. Upon entering my first year of high school, I did not know anybody in the district- not a teacher, not a parent, not a student, and I felt completely lost. I was placed in all academic classes to ensure that I did not fall behind among my peers due to my previous…

At the beginning of my high school days when I was a freshman or “fish” as the upperclassmen would call us, I never knew where I really belonged. Every clique or group that I tried to become a part of did not truly fit my personality. Just like the upperclassmen had said, I felt like a small fish in an even bigger sea. It all changed when one day a pep rally was held in honor of our first football game of the season. As I sat in the rickety bleachers and watched the cocky football players walk out followed by the overly-spirited cheerleaders, I sat back in dismay. But then following the cheerleaders,…
On May 2, 2012, the National Football League lost one of its elite players to suicide: Junior Seau. Seau played for the Chargers, Dolphins, and the Patriots during his professional football career and was a 12-time Pro Bowler before retiring in 2009. Three years after his retirement however, Seau committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest with a gun. This greatly shocked the football world and its image of Junior Seau as a person, but it soon realized the cause for his action. Shortly after Seau’s death, researchers examined Seau’s brain and found that it contained a disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy which is formed by repeated blows to the head; a very common disease among former football players (Football Brains). The Seau family then filed a lawsuit against the NFL claiming that the league held back information from the players about the danger of continuous blows to the head (Seau’s Death on Brain Injuries).…

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a novel that was published in 1960, the times where our nation had segregation and injustice amongst the colored and the whites. Racism presents itself in many ways in the town of Maycomb. Some are blatant and open, but others are more insidious. The plot focuses on a lawyer, Atticus Finch, and how he defends a colored man, Tom Robinson, who is wrongly accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. When they go to trial Tom is automatically a victim of injustice when they find him guilty of rape just because he is black (Normney 5). om Robinson’s trial, and in fact his entire life, was badly affected by racism. It is truly a testament to the corruption of society when a person who has earned a bad reputation is held in higher esteem than a person who was born with it, as is the case with Bob Ewell and Tom Robinson. Even though Tom was obviously honest in his testament, the jury sided with Bob Ewell because he was white. They made this decision despite the fact that the Ewell family was widely known to be a worthless part of society. Jem, not being racially prejudiced, could not understand this mentality. As Atticus pointed out, “If you (Jem) had been on the jury, son, and eleven other boys like you, Tom would be a free man.” (Lee 7).…
There is nothing particularly noteworthy about Robert Shawn Keever. He is loud, boisterous, sarcastic, and a man of total depravity. To date he has been in no clubs or sports. He has yet to hold a job, nor do I believe he has the capability to even hold such a responsibility. If it were a matter of GPA, he’d fall short there too as it is 2.3. As a student he has no ambition for higher education and would rather join the military. His relationship with his peers and family can be described as abusive and unruly. In the past he has skipped school and deliberately started fights. Also, he has no faith. This being a nation founded by Jesus would make him an enemy of America and its values. His only saving grace is a profound love for most social studies and a strong sense of loyalty to those who have managed to make friends with him. Thus far he has taken every social studies class Smyrna High School has to offer.…
Throughout my time in high school, the four components of the Micah Program have been a key aspect of my life. Investing my time in these four components have helped me discover my interest and open my eyes to many new experiences. My service also helped me become more involved in my community and the problems that it’s facing. Although I have been a nondenominational Christian for my entire life, I have recently begun to look into other religions. Looking into other religions has allowed to realize the diversity that is within religion.…
For the first time since the brave Hilary Clinton, we have another woman running for president. Ladies and gentlemen, Kim Kardashian. Kardashian has plenty of prior accomplishments she has already made including things like her families reality TV show which has lasted eight seasons with three spinoff shows. Kardashian and her other two sisters also have their own chain of stores named “DASH” which have three locations, the first in Los Angeles, the second in Miami and the last they opened in New York City. Kardashian also recently got engaged to one of the richest rappers in the US, Kanye West. Their engagement took place on her birthday at Giants Stadium where Kardashian, of course, said yes. Their child North is now 4 months old.…
God’s word always needs to be shared with everyone but more especially to the youth. God has always been a huge part of my everyday life. Finding a place where I would be able to share this joy was a priority I had. Camp Skyline was undeniably the place for that. Each night we would sit around a campfire just to hear the songs of the praises to God’s word. Voices as sweet and soft as honey would travel through the mountain air as if a bee on a summer day. Beneath that sound would be the faint crackling of the fire that blazed before us and faintly gave light to each face. On Sundays we had “Skyline Church.” Everyone was to wear pure white on this day. Upon entering church I would see girls of all ages running around in white dresses that were catered to fit each of the hundreds of girls. During those next few hours praises would be lifted and hearts would be led to God as if a lost child in…
American public education started with the Common School concept and by the middle of the nineteenth century many of the themes that defined public schools in America were in place. Various reasons for the Common School movement themes are still practice in public schools today such as, schools as managers of public thoughts, racial and ethnic conflicts, equal opportunity for all children, and moral reform. The two most significant themes, which have impacted public education and children are, globalization and cultural domination.…
These organizations helped with the school to raise money and understand the quality of working together. My shyness all went away at this time, I no longer had a reason to be held back. The more organizations I joined, the more I grew as a person. In the beginning of my junior year i was inducted to National Honor Society, became colorguard captain and historian officer for band. Becoming colorguard captain meant more than being a simple member. The day i learned about myself having an interdependence nature was during the day of our first band competition of the year. Having to wake up early and do an SAT exam was simple. The fact that i had to do the SAT then drive an hour after the exam was different. I could've chosen to not go. Everyone already knew their performance.Yet i needed to take my responsibility as a leader and be physically there for my part. Servant leadership is a component of being part of a true community. This includes everyone being part of a family. I didn't realize how limited my definition of “family” was. My definition is now more than flesh and bone; it is my very own…
