School Board Meeting
On Monday night, the Board of Education met to discuss the possibility of building more facilities to accommodate the rising student population in the school district. The two and a half hour meeting was close to getting out of hand, as even members of the 152 person audience got involved in the heated debates. The subject opened with a report from superintendent Arlene A. Dunlap. She stated that student enrollment in the district was up eighteen percent from last year. "This is disturbing because we are running out of space in our classrooms and education is suffering because of it." She exclaimed. Dunlap asked the board to approve a 3.3 million dollar building program that would provide the district with two new elementary school and a new junior high school. One of the elementary schools would be built on the west side of town, the other on east side, and the junior high school would be built in the central part of town. Ellen Massey, of the board, contributed her opinion, stating that "clearly, quite clearly, we need these new schools. We are fifty years behind the times in this town." Jack Armstrong responded by shouting, "This is a complete waste of taxpayers money!!" President Hammond interjected, telling Armstrong that he was out of order, but she was hushed by members of the audience demanding that he be heard.
"let him speak," they muttered.
When senior class president Kimberly Hawkins was asked to comment on the issue, she impartially stated, "sounds good to me..."
The board finally came to a conclusion when they voted 4-2 in favor of placing the issue on the November general election ballot.
Hammond, George Bailey, Massey, and Ramon Chavez voted in favor of placing the issue on the ballot, whereas Armstrong and Verne Shestak were opposed to doing

Among the budget cuts that the city council is considering is a 5 percent reduction in funds for secondary education. As the principal of one of the junior high schools that could be affected, Stella is worried. Such a reduction would almost certainly mean teacher layoffs and fewer teachers teaching more students.…

On October 8 2013 I was able to watch the Centennial School District Board meeting live via their website, which worked very much to my advantage because transportation was a major issue. The meeting took place at the town hall in Warminster, PA. The mission of the school board is to provide an environment for all of its students where they can maximize their potential in education and extracurricular activities with as little difficulty as possible. The school board specifically establishes and evaluates policies for operation of the schools, selects a Superintendent, approves a budget, levies taxes as a means of raising revenue, hires administration, establishes curriculum content, and adopts textbooks upon administrative recommendation. The members of the board include: President Dr. Andrew Pollock, Superintendent Dr. Joyce Mundy, Vice President Betty Huf, Asst. Secretary Kati Driban, and school directors Steven Adams, Michael Hartline, Charles Kleinschmidt, Jane Lynch, Mark Miller, and David Shafter.…

One of the teachers took the podium addressing the school board with some concerns about her school having very few teachers. She told the board that the shortage of teachers meant that class sizes were large and the work load was heavy. She made the comment “if I look tired it’s because I am.” I was impressed by that statement because that teacher didn’t have to go around campus complaining instead, she went to the school board to let them know. Mary Jadlowski Assistant Superintendent discussed an AP program that allows high school students that qualify to start taking college courses before they graduate. Those were the most interesting things about the meeting in my opinion. Towards the end of the meeting President Dr. Olgletree discussed how they were going to spend their funds within the district and surrounding areas. I wasn’t really interested in that because I didn’t understand some of the things he was talking about. What was surprising is that after the teacher had been chosen to have her name on the new school almost everyone who was in the meeting had left excluding the Board of Education members. It seemed to me the audience cared about nothing else that was said because…

I would like to start this report off by saying that I have never been to city council meeting before, even though my father was the mayor, and still serves on city council back in my home town of Kingsford, Michigan. I found this experience both interesting and exhausting to see and understand the scope of the council’s role and responsibilities in keeping this city running. All members of council must have to have a very extensive education and background in finance and public administration even in mid-sized city like Colorado Springs. I couldn’t imagine the business required in a major metropolitan city.…

The city council meeting could have been interesting if it hadn't dragged on for so long. At first I wasn't sure of what was going on because I couldn't find where they were at on the agenda. I finally found my place when they were doing the announcements and presentations. This part of the meeting took the most time, but I guess it was the most important. They gave six different presentations. The first was a proclamation in recognition of Business Appreciation Week. Four people went up on stage to accept the proclamation and the Pres./ CEO gave a speech. Next was the presentation of a certificate in recognition for Costco Wholesale. The received the BRACE award for "Retail Business of the Year." Dr. Min-Lee Cheng then went up to accept a Proclamation in recognition of "Mosquito and Vector Control and West Nile Virus Awareness Week.…

In the school display policy it should include the aim and objectives for the display. It is there to stimulate learning environment. It helps a child to gain new information and also to build their learning skills. The displays must be kept in good condition and also where possible trimmed and mounted. Staple guns and sharp pins should be kept out of reach of children and also removed properly when taking down old posters. A person may use different materials to help their posters look better and more eye catching for the children. Posters should be mounted in different ways and in different varieties. Heading, titles, letters and information must be written clearly for children to read. Display areas must be kept tidy and clean to prevent accidents. Display areas can be in the corridors, the classroom and outside the principal’s office. Staff must take pictures and record evidence for their reference. Staff have responsibility to ensure that the posters are kept in good condition and also to use health and safety procedures while putting up displays. Staff must use staple guns rather than pins as this could be dangerous if children get their hands on it. Staff must know how to approach hanging up displays that are high by using ladder not standing on chairs and tables. In the display policy it includes to use spray glue not super glue and this contains many dangerous chemicals. Display policy outline the rules and regulations that staff and students need to know before they are able to put displays…

    Class Size Matters!

One of the most important parts of an effective education is the learning environment. The factors of the learning environment have a lot to do with how a student feels and how well they’re able to communicate with their teacher. Are they able to ask questions or is the class simply hurried along because so much needs to be covered and there isn’t nearly enough time to stop for every question? A big factor in creating an adequate learning environment is maintaining small class sizes. Class size has been a continuing problem in LAUSD in recent years due to budget cuts, but should the students suffer because of lack of funds?…
