The past three years has seen a transition to CCSSM by Redlands USD, and the middle school I teach at is no exception. Clement Middle School currently educates one thousand and twenty–seven, sixth through eighth grade learners in a Redlands vicinity. Although the school attends to learners of diverse backgrounds, sixty–nine percent are Hispanics, eighteen percent are Caucasians, and the remaining thirteen percent are Asians, Blacks or African American, and American Indian or Alaskan Native. About seventy–one percent of the student population participates in the free and reduced lunch program, and are of low socioeconomic status.
Students and Teacher Students in my classes resemble the school’s characteristics of diversity.

Welcome to the world of Jenks Public Schools (JPS), a world where high achievement, an outstanding athletics program, and multitudinous opportunities for involvement in extracurricular activities abound! It is a world in which high test scores and national awards are the norm rather than the exception, and yet never taken for granted. An important goal of Jenks Public Schools is to identify and provide appropriate educational experiences for those students who give evidence of high performance capability in the area of intelligence or in high school academics and who require differentiated learning opportunities or experiences, provided by the school, that develop such capabilities. There are thirty-five private/nonprofit schools in the Tulsa area. There are three private schools within the JPS attendance area. Over the past three years there has been an average of 177 open transfer requests from families in other school districts to enroll in JPS. Conversely, during the past two years there has been an average of 30 open transfer requests from JPS families to enroll in other districts. This is a testimony to the high expectations for teaching and learning in the District. Because of the desire on the part of parents to enroll their students in JPS, homes sell for premium prices within the District’s boundaries. Base on housing starts and the average cost of homes. The net gain of the total district enrollment has increased by 823 students over the past 10 years, from 8448 students in 1994 to 9271 students in 2004. Jenks Public Schools is a leader in the implementation of technology tools and the integration of technology in the curriculum. Specific standards and objectives communicate the expectations…

According to the Iowa Department of Education website, there are 200 students attending the Paton-Churdan K-12 School in the 2016-2017 school year. Paton-Churdan is located in the small, rural town of Churdan, about 13 miles north of Jefferson. Of the 200 students, about 3.5% are Hispanic, 5.5% are multiracial, and 1.5% is Asian, making Caucasian the largest group at 89.5%. In looking at these percentages, it is easy to see that we do not fit into the idea of a diverse culture. However, we do have a large group of students who are found on the Free and Reduced Lunch program. There are 92 students who qualify for this program, close to half of the student population. According to the Iowa State University-Iowa School District Profiles, during…

Whenever there is the mention of the great State of Texas, one tends to automatically visualize a sweltering hot, baron wasteland, saturated with 6-foot rattlesnakes, enormous oil wells, and handsome cowboys galloping on horses, with a six shooter attached to their hip. Few people are aware that deep in the heart of Texas, there is a paradise known as the Hill Country,…

During this quarter, I got an opportunity to become a math tutor for 7th grade students at KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy. This middle school is located at downtown San Diego, it is opposite to a superior court where always have few polices walk around this area and enclosed few apartments which is a pretty safe and quiet area. I found that it is rarely to see a white people in KIPP; Although most of the students in KIPP are from low income family, I felt like I was always energetic when I entered KIPP since most of the students are always happy, active and brisk. The classrooms in KIPP are conducive to learning because there have lots of test paper with 90 scores or up pasted around the wall, and also lots of posters about math too. Each…

I have had the opportunity to go to two middle schools due to moving locations. This paper is going to be based on my experiences at Hermosa Middle School in Farmington, New Mexico. Since, this where I started caring more about my education and I can relate more to this placement. To begin with, Hermosa Middle School serves grade from 6th-8th. The demographic in this school is about 42% Caucasian, 31% Hispanic, 23% Native-American, 2% Asian, and 2% African-American. Notice, that there is a high population of Hispanics, I believe that this is why I started to be more involve at school. Prior to moving to Farmington, New Mexico; I lived and attended a junior high school in Huntington, Utah where 5% were Hispanic. I can honestly state, “That Hermosa Middle School is a contemporary developmentally responsive middle schools”. I quote this because I can point out the differences between what both schools had offered me as a student.…

Washington Elementary School is located in West Orange, New Jersey in a neighborhood where mostly African American and Hispanic businesses and people were surrounding the area. As I arrived to the school or left, I usually only saw minorities in the surrounding neighborhood. This correlated with the students I saw in the classroom I observed, and throughout the school. In the classroom there was a total of 17 students, all of which were minorities. Ten of the students are Hispanic and seven are African American. I did not see too many White or Asian students throughout the school, or in the neighborhood. However, the racial and ethnic demographics for West Orange showed that the majority of the population is White. Statistics on race and ethnicity show that 62.1% of West Orange identify as being White, 17.1% as being Black, 10% as being Hispanic, 8.1% as being Asian, 2.4% as being two…

In the text Still Separate, Still Unequal by Jonathan Kozol, the segregation in education is discussed and examples are given to prove that the segregation is regressing all around our country. Jonathan Kozolargues that segregation is still a major issue in our education system, and limits for achievement are being set by school districts, which is only making the achievement gap between black and white students wider.…

These are the questions that arise when examining retention and advancements. This paper will study the practice of grade level retention, briefly examining the historical perspectives that have driven the state statutes that govern the practice of grade level retention. This paper will continue by examining current state practices and how said statutes are incorporated into our San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) local promotion and retention policy. The paper will conclude by offering some insight into how the local policy can be altered to more closely align with the state statutes, as well as successful policies of neighboring districts. Retention Statistics Given the dynamic of testing in our state and district one might assume that the highest retention rates in the district would fall in the fifth and eighth grade. Those are the two years prior to high school that state testing occurs. According to the Texas Education Association (TEA) 2011-2012 dropout data shown in Table 1, the SAISD retained 8 of 3903 fifth…

The wage gap is one of the most persistent pieces of misinformation of our time. When you account for experience, education, job choices, and hours worked, the gender based wage gap almost entirely disappears. In a state of the union address, President Obama stated that women deserve equal pay for equal work and went on to say that for every dollar a man earns, a woman only earns 77 cents. If this was true, women would make up the overwhelming majority of the work force. If companies could simply save 23 percent on employee wages, why wouldn’t they?…

Today the federal government has taken a role as a promoter of educational opportunity to students with numerous disadvantages. These disadvantages range from poverty to discrimination based on race and sex, to special education needs or even language barriers (Umpstead, 2008). Funds are supplied by the federal government for specific programs to improve educational quality; however, there may not be enough funds to cover all that is needed to make improvements. This is the controversial debate over the No Child Left Behind Act (2001). This act assisted in setting priorities when it came to education, but the accountability measures made it difficult to “use assessments as levers for good practices” (Phillips & Wong, p.38). The Common Core Standards, developed by the education team at the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, is an education initiative that follows the basis of standards-based education. The purpose is to provide a clear and consistent understanding of what students are expected to learn. College ready is the goal. With this, parents and teachers know exactly what they need to do to help students succeed. It will allow states to work from the same core and share with one another not only what works, but also how best to teach the core.…
