History of Basketball One of the greatest sports in the world is basketball. This great game was invented by James Naismith, a Canadian American sports coach and innovator, in December of 1891. James Naismith was a physician from Canada and attended McGill’s University in Montreal, Canada. He introduced the game of basketball when he was an instructor at the Young Men Christian Association Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. He created the game because he wanted to think of something the kids would be able to play during cold seasons, in a small area. He wanted to come up with something where you wouldn’t have to be the strongest but have to have to be skilled. Naismith's invention of basketball was invented in 1891 by taking a soccer ball and a peach basket into the gym and shooting it into the basket. The game of basketball involved the elements such as hockey, soccer, and football. Back then, the game of basketball was first played with a soccer ball. In 1893, James Naismith replaced the peach basket with iron hoops and a hammock-styled basket. Ten years later the open-ended nets that we have today was made. Back then when Naismith first invented basketball, every time you scored, you would have to retrieve the ball from the basket. That was how basketball came to be. After the invention of the hoop basket, Naismith made up the 13 rules for basketball. Since then, the game of basketball was officially considered a sport that people enjoy playing and never want to stop. The game of basketball is a sport that requires skill and practice. It is played by two teams with 5 people on each team on a rectangular court. The objective of basketball is to shoot the ball through a hoop that is attacked to a backboard which is 10 feet high. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins! Basketball is one of the most popular sports throughout the entire world. It is considered to be a favorite sport that people just can't stop playing. It is amazing how an invention can make such a big difference in the world. Basketball is a great sport to play and the more you practice, the better you'll be. Famous basketball legends such as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant have broken records in basketball that no one can compete with. It's amazing how an invention that requires practice and skill can make such a big impact in the world. Because of James Naismith, basketball is a sport that almost everyone enjoys playing, and it's all thanks to him.

James Naismith was the creator of basketball. He created it in 1891 to condition young athletes in the winter. The “hoop” was a peach basket and the ball was a soccer styled ball. There were many rules for the new game. He created it in a YMCA gym in Springfield, Massachusetts. His team of eighteen was divided into two teams of nine and then the peach baskets were nailed above their heads. Every time one would score a basket, the game was stopped for the janitor to get up on a ladder and retrieve the ball. Later on, the bottoms of the “hoops” were taken out and they became a (sort of) real basket.…

According to Dale Hanson’s book Basketball, the first of these original rules was that the player could throw the ball anywhere with one or both hands; the second rule was that one may hit the ball anywhere with one or both hands. The third rule was that players could not run with the ball, and the fourth rule was that the ball was to be held in between the hands. The fifth of these rules explained that there was to be no fouling, “shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping, or striking in any way” (66), and that a second foul could result in the player being banned until another goal was made. The sixth rule expressed that hitting the ball with a fist would result in a foul, and the seventh rule said that three repeated fouls from the same team would result in a point for the opposing team. The eighth rule determined that a point would be scored when a player shot or hit the ball into the goal from the ground. The ninth of these rules stated that after the ball was knocked out-of-bounds, the ball would be thrown in and only played by the player who caught the ball. Rules ten and eleven pertained to the umpire and referee. The umpire had the ability to disqualify players whereas the referee determined whether the ball was in-bounds, decided to which team the ball belonged, and also kept track of the playing time. The twelfth rule expressed how long…
