Attention all students! School is starting August thirty-first! The day most students dread most is happening two days earlier than usual. The times the schools start are also changing. Eighth graders going to Evergreen high school: School will start at 8:40 a.m. instead of 7:45 a.m. Dismissal is at 3:10. Students going to HeLa, your school will start at 8:05 a.m. and at 2:35 p.m. Sixth and Seventh graders, school will begin at 8:05 and end at 2:35. You and HeLa students share school times! Middle schoolers may be going ten minutes earlier, but you also get to leave ten minutes earlier.
Why Are The Schools Starting Two Days Early?
The schools are starting August thirty-first this year because Labor day is happening on
September fifth this year. Lately the first day of school has been three days before Labor day weekend. Since its happening on the fifth, we have to start early. If Labor day was the normal time, we’d start on the usual September day.
Why The Time Changes?
Why are the schools changing their times? Studies have shown that teens who get more sleep function better. By starting the high school later it gives teens more sleeping time! These studies also show that teens stay up late and then get up early leaving no room for sleep. This means they will be like zombies and can't focus on their school work. Another reason to shift the times is to make the rate of drop outs go down. Research shows that changing the starting times of high schools reduces the amount of missed days, and late kids. Academic success is improved by this. When school starts at 8:30 a.m. or later, 60% of students obtain at least eight hours of sleep per night, making them more human than zombie!
