school uniforms if they owned a uniform that was old or worn out or even if they had to settle on another type of uniform because their family could not come up with the money to buy the correct uniform (Poverty). According to the Education Journal, children can be forced to move schools because they cannot afford the uniforms (CMA). They may also only get one or two pairs of clothes for the week. Lemouse also said that students might be forced to use handed down clothing from siblings or cousins (Lemouse).
For families that do not have a problem with money, perhaps owning school uniforms is still expensive. Kim Austin White has a quote in The Lufkin News saying that not only do these families have to buy two sets of clothing, they also have to do twice as much laundry because their children are constantly changing in and out of clothing when they go to and from their home. This could be a problem for anybody because it is twice the work and effort for school when things could easily just stay the same and not double the cost or workload (Lufkin).
In other cases, school uniforms can cause a strain on families.
Families with low incomes that have to put money towards school uniforms and casual clothing may be losing money for things such as mortgage, groceries, or even bills. This extra expense caused by school uniforms can cause a serious strain on the relationships of a family. In a study done by Education Journal, out of all the children studied, over half of them decided not to tell their parents that they needed something for school because they were afraid that their family could not afford it. This is not a good thing. No child should have to be scared to ask their parents for something that they need for school. The school uniforms are only putting a strain on families because parents give up things or go a month behind on bills so that the child can have the uniforms. Children are too afraid to ask their parents for school supplies or uniforms because they know that their parents are going to struggle to get them. The families are only trying to make ends meet and they cannot make those ends meet if they have extra expenses such as school uniforms tied to them like a ball and chain strapped to their ankles
(Poverty).
