School Year Round School Research Paper
Year Round School: Friend or Foe? As seasons change, and the school year progresses, many students lose that “first day of school excitement” (I know that I do!) (parenthesis) that they once felt. So how do we regain that joy that once filled us? The answer is simple, year round school. Having school year round will enable students to expand their knowledge, decrease the time during which kids are idle when they tend to get into the most trouble, and reduce the stress levels of both teachers and students. As kids, we love those three months of summer vacation where we can forget about those math problems, or that science project. But is it really helping us? According to nayre.org, the Director of John Hopkins University for Summer Learning claims that 2.6 months of learning are simply lost during the summer months. (Priddy) In order to make up for the learning loss, teachers must take time to refresh their students’ memories, and review past lessons instead of furthering the students’ knowledge by moving forward. (complex/periodic sentence) All of the time spent reviewing and reiterating past lessons is time lost, and takes away from the students’ total education. Having school year round eliminates this problem and allows for …show more content…
Most parents do not have a three month summer vacation; they must work during the day. (compound sentence) This means that their child or children might be left alone for the entire day. With some children, this is not a problem, but with some others, this could wreck havoc. Day care can cost an arm and a leg (synecdoche), and some parents do not have adequate day care options, especially for three months during the summer. All year school breaks are more spread out and are normally set around the holidays, when it might be easier for parents to find someone to watch their child, or even to take a few days off work.

Many people believe that it should not happen because it causes issues with scheduling sports and other extracurricular activities. Now, it is already hard enough to schedule activities and vacations for students, parents, and teachers alike, and year-round schooling just makes these problems worse. “It sites, ‘excessive absences’ by students and reports by principals and teachers that ‘proficient students felt stigmatized by the mandatory additional time, which was viewed as punishment rather than enforcement’” (6). Along with scheduling problems, year-round schooling actually does not improve academic achievement. Teachers and parents may say that it works, but, in reality, there is no data proving that year-round schooling makes a difference in academic achievement. “‘We are not seeing our year-round schools outperforming those on traditional calendars,’ declares Michael Evans, chief communications officer in the Wake County (N.C.) Public School System (WCPSS).” (6). If people say that the only reason year-round schools exist is because of the summer slide they are wrong. Most students come back to school in September at about the same academic ability as when they left in June. The results about year-round schools and academic achievement are inconclusive. This makes it an invalid reason to switch to a year-round…

Would a year-round school schedule improve students’ academic performance? There are many debates on whether schools should extend their educational calendar to a full year. While year-round school schedules have their share of benefits, there are also negative outcomes. People often claim the more the better, but what really matters is the quality, not quantity, of education. Year-round schooling should not be organized because students may develop health issues, wouldn’t be prepared for college, and students may miss out on other opportunities during the summer.…

There are many approaches that might interest you about year-round schools, but here are three that I find interesting. The first fact about year-round school is that they have short breaks every so often. In the article Year Round School vs. Traditional Schedules in Public Schools it states, “...many schools are getting rid of the traditional summer vacation, yet are simultaneously providing students with more frequent and consistent breaks from school.” Since the traditional summer vacation of around 3 months is no longer essential some experts are saying that the traditional schools are not what is best for today’s children. The second fact about year-round school is that they have schedules that may very slightly. In the article it states, “...the most popular schedule is what’s called a 45-15 plan…”. Which means that children go to school for 45 days and then have 15 days off. The last fact about year-round school is that many states and places have taken part in the year-round…

With year-round schooling, we can better transition to the next grade without having to recap what we learned in the previous year. This point can be proven in three basic concepts; First, less schooldays wasted, more days progressing and advancing. Secondly, year-round schooling will create less stress for students and teachers . Finally, information can be retained faster, save time for the teachers, and improve test grades.…

Imagine yourself on summer vacation. It’s warm and the weather is beautiful.Though this vacation might sound good, imagine the boredom you will feel after three long months of doing almost nothing. Summer seems to have lasted forever, and once you go back to school, you hardly remember anything that you had learned last year. Now imagine school in November. You’ve been at it for three months, and you’re struggling to get through. School might seem to be dragging on and on. With year-round school both of these scenarios can be changed for the better. All of this leads me to believe that more freshmen should support going to a year-round school system.…

The third reason is that more and more schools are abandoning year round schooling calendars. For instance, according to a poll from www.youdebate.com, Prince William County in Virginia returned to a traditional calendar after 9 years operating year round schooling. The reason is that teachers found students made less academic improvement in summer school, as well as few cost benefits and parent reaction. They discovered there were not enough advantages to outweigh the disadvantages. In fact, most people think that summer is a time to relax and learn new knowledge from places out of school such as museums and nature, but not keep studying at school. (stop)…

It leaves kids behind by them not learning or studying during the break. So they tend to lose things during summer break There is a reason why schools shut down for 10 weeks every summer, but not for a wonderful reason. The reason being that it’s been like that since the 20th century. People think that it should stay the same because it has never changed. Learning should be a year round for students, even during the summer. In September students get up as well as go back to school having lost two months worth of learning.…
