I disagree with Leon Botstein's essay "Let Teenagers Try Adulthood". Botstein argues that teenagers have matured much more quickly over the past few years. Therefore, he believes high school be abolished and a child's education should begin earlier in order for students to graduate around the age of sixteen rather than eighteen. High school is intended for students of a certain maturity level. But now, students are exceeding that level rapidly. Botstein sees high school as a place full of superficial, adolescent teenagers that care more about appearances, popularity, cliques and sports than education. Because they have reached a high maturity level at such a young age already, there are many students that are wasting their junior and senior years away in high school rather than starting college. I disagree with Botstein however. High school is a transition period for students to learn how to take on more responsibilities. It is the time for teenagers to become more social and independent. While I do agree with Botstein on his point of maturity levels growing faster, I don't agree that students should be graduating earlier than they currently are. Not all students are capable of the same things. Most high school students are not prepared to enter into adulthood just yet. They still need someone to guide them along a path until they've graduated. Age restrictions are applied to the youth community for a reason. The majority of teenagers are not ready to handle the responsibilities that come their way. The legal age for drinking is 21 because of safety concerns as well as the responsibility that comes with the consumption of alcohol. Fortunately for Texas, teenagers are able to obtain their drivers license at the age of sixteen, but other states, like California, have citizens wait until they are eighteen to obtain their license with the same privileges as a sixteen year old from Texas. Responsibilities are tough to handle, even for an adult. So why have the same…

The aim of this proposal is to wake awareness about a major problem which has been happening in front of our eyes for some time now. As the years go by there are more and more old-fashioned and classical buildings which are demolished for different intentions and corporate companies.…
"The Schoolteachers Guest" was written by Isabel Allende and was set in Agua Santa, in the south of America, in the early 1800's. In the schoolteachers guest the main lead, Ines, was a very headstrong person, determined and a "well respected matron of the community". Her strong links and family bonding with the community determined her role even more as she was "the towns only schoolteacher". the writer portrayed Ines as this hard going disciplined woman but also a woman who had a son whom she cared for, this arouses a feeling of love between the mother and son, the writer explains how her son was "the centre of inclination to indulge him" making him first priority in her world but then again disciplining him at the same time.…
In the documentary On The Way to School they describe and show the physical and cultural difficulties that some of the children in developing countries have to persevere through. Someone who could benefit the concept of a smart village is 12 year old Zahira. Zahira lives in Morocco, it is a very rigid, rocky, and arid place. These physical issues could make it very difficult for her to travel to school. It also doesn’t help that it is a 4 hour walk, though it is a boarding school and she only travels the distance twice a week it is a very rigorous journey.…
There are a number of reasons why I have considered Suny Empire State College as an option to continue my education. Suny Empire offers multiple study options such as studying with a mentor, as well as convenient online study. Suny Empire offers much more affordable education rates than many other colleges out there. I’d like to continue my education through Suny Empire to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Community and Human Services. I believe this field of study is ideal for me as I have prior Human Services experience. Since receiving my Associates Degree through Cayuga Community College, I believe I have gained a lot of knowledge, and that I am ready for the next step for my education.…
The story of The Guest is about Daru, a lonely schoolteacher in Camus’ boyhood home of Algeria. Daru likes living in solitude, but he must learn to recognize that choices are unavoidable and that his choices matter. The story takes place in the middle of the nineteenth century when Algeria is still a land full of conflict between the oppressed Algerian people and their French colonial rulers. At the beginning of the story the French send the gendarme, Balducci to Daru with an Arab convicted of murder. Through Balducci the prisoner comes under the charge of Daru, who must choose whether to turn him over to the law or act according to his honor and let him go free. During the Arab’s overnight stay, Daru and his guest develop a bond that teaches Daru about the brotherhood of humankind and his equality with this prisoner, a criminal from a different race.…

American, Charles Baxter, wrote the contemporary short story, “Gryphon,” in the United States, in 1985. The time represented in the story is roughly, the 1960s; during which there is a moral and philosophical upheaval occurring throughout the nation. The country (USA), is in the midst of the Vietnam War, the “cold-war,” a sexual revolution, and experiences a huge spasm and clash of ideals between parents and children of the “baby-boomer” generation. The action in Gryphon, takes place in an elementary fourth grade class, in a rural community called Five Oaks, Michigan. Baxter invokes some symbolism as he chooses the unusual name of “Gryphon,” for the title of his piece. A “Gryphon,” is a mythical creature that is, “half bird and half lion.” (251) One of the main characters in the story, a substitute teacher who could be compared to a “Gryphon,” has such outstanding beliefs and ideals that in the memory of the students, her presence borders on mythical. She is so different than the community they have known so far, that for these young students, it is easier to think of her as a creature out of a fictional cartoon, than as an actual teacher. In Gryphon, Tommy, the narrator, experiences a coming of age, as he relates how Miss Ferenczi contradicts the conservative lessons taught by his full time teacher, Mr. Hibler, in this account of small town life in a Midwestern village.…
Everybody at the school is expected to perform from day one where there will be no mercy. That’s the way it works. It is as David described with figurative words “It´s everybody into the language pool, sink or swim”. It is a rapid way for the teacher to see how the students perform. The class begins and the teacher walks in. From now on the teacher is judging every move and every mistake. You get the impression that this teacher is tough and also a little bit evil. The teacher asks the students one by one which things they like and which they dislike. A student called Anna is asked and answers that she hates mosquitos. The teacher is quick and respond with sarcasm “Oh really, how interesting. I thought that everyone loved the mosquito….” This illustrates pretty much how the teacher’s personality is. She isn’t a sweetheart who thinks the students need some good care and help because they are unsecure in the…

The finest thing at the Prep, without exception, are the teachers. They express their dedication to the students each and every day with through their words, choices, and actions. Noted for their patience, commitment, and talent, Prep teachers often sacrifice their free time to help students in need. As moderators for clubs and coaches for sport and academic teams, they are present on campus well after the school day ends and seems to enjoy the extracurricular activities as much as the students. Teachers at the Prep also have a sense of humor. Subbing for Mr. Dooley’s freshman class one day, Herr Lynch walked into class with a brisk pace, picked up a marker, and emphatically began writing on the board. Unhappy with his work, he quickly erased…
This paper overviews and compares the personality and characteristic differences between two men. Shamengwa and Corwin are the two men who are compared in this paper from the short story “Shamengwa.” They are compared for their differences, which they have a lot of things uncommon with each other. It also relates these two together by showing how they are both intrigued by the music in which the violin produces. They both play with their heart and play to the point where they make others cry. The paper also overviews how Shamengwa teaches Corwin how to play the violin for his punishment of stealing Shamengwa’s violin in the first place.…
When I think back to my most memorable teacher I immediately am reminded of my third grade teacher Ms. Castaldi. Her classroom was set up in small groups of four around the room, her desk in the middle. I liked this classroom arrangement as a child because I felt like she was one of the students. Ms. Castadli treated all her students with respect and was extremely caring and understanding, like a mother. She had a true passion for what she did and it really showed because all of her students were successful in the classroom.…
