Sometimes it is something that we can predict. Other times the crisis happens upon us suddenly and without warning. In departments such as the Emergency Department (ED), crisis can generally be expected and the ED staff can safely believe that there will be a crisis during their shift. The outcome of the crisis can depend on how it is approached and dealt with. A patient’s rapid deterioration of their state of health or arrest in front of the family is a common crisis situation that occurs where I work. This puts the staff as well as the patient and patient’s family in crisis mode. I feel that my job as the patient’s nurse is to make sure that the situation flows as efficiently as possible. Crisis communication needs to be initiated immediately. My verbal and nonverbal communication can affect the situation. I also need to pick up on the verbal and nonverbal cues of the family. It is also important to collaborate with the team, listen to both staff and families and communicate in a professional manor. Active listening is a prominent quality of a leader, along with how they lead the team. A positive approach is always best while maintaining clear and concise communication. There are times when it is necessary to use assertive communication. This is true when dealing with a difficult person, staff or family member. Going to the Simulation lab always evokes some sort of tensed feeling for me due to the fact that I feel like being analyzed critically by my professors and instructors. This is more difficult and stressful because I imagine being on stage performing to an audience who know far more than you do you the extent that your mistakes would never escape their eagle eyes. Despite these kinds of feelings, I felt this sim lab was an improvement of my performance in terms of having the composure to make informed decisions. This happened to be second time of playing the role of a primary nurse but my first in playing a combined role of primary/treatment nurse. I could see a big improvement in my assessment skills even though I couldn’t complete a full body assessment. I was also able to effectively communicate with my team members, the patient and the family member.…

Overall, a lot has changed since for me since the first SIM paper. I remember being so scared and daunted by how you described the assignments. But as we progressed further through the course, it became easier. But while it was easier, I still faced a lot of challenges as the semester progressed. I started to get overwhelmed with other classes, which began to take a toll on me. I started to fall behind in tasks and was not able to turn in big assignments on time. I felt more capable of doing a SIM paper at the end of the semester, but it was a lot more stressful. The MGR assignments were ones that forced me outside of my comfort zone and helped me grow a deeper sense of humility. They forced to think more in-depth on issues and made me really…

Life for me has been very interesting. I started off in the nursing field as a nursing assistant and patient care tech at 19 working my way through school both full-time and part-time until I finally graduated from Virginia State University with my Associate’s of Science Degree in Nursing. After accomplishing that goal I have reached somewhat of a plateau in my life I have so many short and long-term goals I want to accomplish both professionally and personally. Some of professional goals are, becoming a supervisor at my current job, obtaining my Advance Life Support Certification, obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, enlisting into the Navy Nurse Corps, becoming a Nurse Practitioner, and eventually one day becoming an Administrator of an Acute Care Facility. As well as having professional goals in life you should have personal goals. My short and long term-personal goals are; relocating to Chicago, Illinois, getting married, and having children. The typical American Dream. These goals are not far from my reach with self motivation and perseverance all of these goals can be accomplished.…

On January 11th, 2017, I had the opportunity to engage in a pediatric simulation with my clinical group. The simulation took place in the simulation lab at Western Regional School of Nursing. My clinical group, two nursing instructors, and I were present during the event. Our clinical group was there because it was a clinical component of our pediatric clinical rotation. We were required to apply our knowledge and use critical thinking during the simulation, acting as if it were a real life experience. Our clinical group was separated into two smaller groups, and we worked together during the simulation to provide care and utilize our skills. One of our nursing instructors guided us throughout the scenario…
