Sci/275 Week 1 Sim Reflection
2nd week of sim lab, we are given a scenario for the day. I was to play the role of family member, whose husband is admitted as a result of severe knife like epigastric pain on the RUQ. Diagnostic test shows pancreatitis. Begin a family member I was so worry about what going on with my husband, I kept asking the nurses to tell me what was going. The nurse did not communicating with me effectively, is like I was left out entirely. Even when the doctor walked in I was expecting the nurses to at least introduce me to the doctor or for the doctor to acknowledge my presence there, but none of this happen, instead they ignored my presence and continued doing their job. I learn a lot through simulation, As a nurse we need to know that communicating
with patients, and their families impacts patient well-being as well the outcome of nursing care. Sometimes family member can be awesome to have around, they are helpful resources to use in term of patient compliance, patient anxiety level also decreased seeing familiar face around them and something they seem less restless and more comfortable when they see their family around them. Nurse need to establish a good rapport with the patient and their family. Acknowledge family member, explain what you’re doing to them even when you think they are paying attention to you. Ask them if they have any questions or concerns, and answer them according to your scope of practice. In my opinion, Communication play a huge role in terms of nursing care. From this point forward, my goal as a student nurse is to communicate with both the patients and their family effectively, for me to always remember that being a patient or the family member of the patient is a difficult place/situation to be under any circumstances.
