Science Viscosity
GCSE Science – Investigative Skills Assignment – Marking Guidelines Chemistry 1.2 – Viscosity of Oils For submission in May 2007 or May 2008
Please mark in red ink, and use one tick for one mark. Subtotals for each part of each question should be written in the right hand margin. Please add annotations where necessary to explain why marks have or have not been awarded. Enter the marks for Section 1 and Section 2 and the total mark on the front cover of the answer booklet. The teacher must sign and date the front cover of the ISA. The papers must be kept in a secure place and must not be returned to candidates. SECTION 1 1 One mark for independent variable eg (How the viscosity of an oil) changes / varies with temperature 2(a) Any one from: (depending on the method used) • • • • • (b) cup viscometer – size of cup / size of cup hole / volume of oil falling ball-bearing – size of ball-bearing / distance the ball bearing falls trapped air bubble – size/diameter of tube / size of bubble / distance the bubble rises angled tile – angle of tile/slide / number of drops / tile surface etc correct answer based on the method used 1 mark 1 mark 1 mark 1 mark

Affects the timing measurement Explanation of how it affects the timing measurement eg the larger the hole the shorter the time it takes to empty the cup

3

Suggestion Explanation eg Uses pipette / burette / syringe (to measure volume) Measures out / delivers volume of oil more precisely or Smaller holes / smaller ball bearings / bigger tile etc Changes to the apparatus result in longer times or Details of a more precise timing method Suitable explanation

1 mark 1 mark

4

A continuous variable ticked for changing temperature or A categoric variable if different oils have been tested

1 mark

5

Amplified correct statement Simple correct statement for 1 mark only or

eg the viscosity of an oil decreases with increasing temperature (or converse) eg the viscosity of an oil changes with temperature

    - Each liquid that was used in Part I has its own independent density. Density being the relationship between the mass and volume of a substance. In this portion of the lab we explored relative density, each liquid compared to the others. The corn syrup was the most dense, in comparison to the other liquids. Whereas the vegetable oil was the least dense compared to the other liquids. The liquids in between followed this same principle in their respective orders.…

Follow Up Questions Show all work for questions involving calculations. Part I Use the concepts/vocabulary of density to explain why the liquids formed layers in Part I of the procedure. (8 pts) The liquids formed layers because they all had different densities. The liquids with light density were towards the top of the layers. What was the control used during the liquid portion of Part I of this experiment (8 pts) (Hint What did you do the same with each liquid to ensure a fair comparison) The control used during the portion of part I was the amount of liquid used. Rank the following in terms of relative density (9 pts) Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) lowest relative density Liquid dishwashing detergent- intermediate relative density Dark corn syrup-high relative density Vegetable oil-second lowest relative density (intermediate) Glycerin-second highest relative density Rubber stopper- second highest relative density Cork stopper- low relative density (ended up with the alcohol Wood- low relative density (ended at the top with the rubber alchohol. Lead- highest relative density Part II (7 pts each) In Part II, what happened to the cans of soda when you placed them in water Use the concepts/vocabulary of volume and mass to explain the final positions of the cans in the sink full of water. The diet soda floated in the water while the regular soda sank. The regular soda had a higher relative…

The Effect of Temperature on The Viscosity of Glycerol Research Question: What is the effect of increasing the independent variable of the temperature of glycerol (30ºC, 40ºC, 50ºC, 60ºC and 70ºC) (+ 0.5ºC) using a hotplate and measured using a thermometer (+ 0.05º), on the dependent variable of time (secs + 0.2) taken for 50mL (+ 0.05ml) of glycerol to flow through a 50cm3 burette (+ 0.05cm3) into a 250 mL beaker (+ 12.5 mL) measured by a digital stopwatch (+ 0.2secs), therefore indicating the viscosity of glycerol? Background Information: Viscosity is a property defined as a liquid’s resistance to flow. When the intermolecular forces are strong within a liquid, there is a higher viscosity. (UC Davis, 2014). The viscosity of a substance is related to the strength of…

The independent variable for this experiment is the concentration of sugar. The range of the concentration of sugar is 0-100% (inclusive), in intervals of 25%. The chosen range is suitable as it is easy to dilute water with the glucose solutions with the given concentrations and the range is wide enough to see a change in the dependant variable, yet the intervals are equally spaced to allow us to record patterns.…
