Scientific and Technological Progress
Scientific and technological progress
It's difficult to overestimate the role of science and technology in our life. They accelerate the development of civilization and help us in our co-operation with nature. Scientists investigate the laws of the universe, discover the secrets of nature, and apply their knowledge in practice improving the life of people. Let's compare our life nowadays with the life of people at the beginning of the 20th century. It has changed beyond recognition. Our ancestors hadn't the slightest idea of the trivial things created by the scientific progress that we use in our everyday life. I mean refrigerators, TV sets, computers, microwave ovens, radio telephones, what not. They would seem miracles to them that made our life easy, comfortable and pleasant. On the other hand, the great inventions of the beginning of the 20th century, I mean radio, airplanes, combustion and jet engines have become usual things and we can't imagine our life without them. A century is a long period for scientific and technological progress, as it's rather rapid. Millions of investigations the endless number of outstanding discoveries have been made. Our century has had several names that were connected with a certain era in science and technology. At first it was called the atomic age due to the discovery of the splitting of the atom. Then it became the age of the conquest of space when for the first time in the history of mankind a man overcame the gravity and entered the Universe. And now we live in the information era when the computer network embraces the globe and connects not only the countries and space stations but a lot of people all over the world. All these things prove the power and the greatest progressive role of science in our life. But every medal has its reverse. And the rapid scientific progress has aroused a number of problems that are a matter of our great concern. These are ecological problems, the safety of nuclear power stations, the

Have you ever thought about how “Romeo and Juliet” would have ended if communication was effectively used throughout the whole play? The outcome of the play would have been significantly different, and most, if not all, of the characters would still be alive. In this essay I will argue that technology does not ensure progress. The first main concept that needs to be clarified is 'technology'. This paper acknowledges the concept 'technology' as being the application of science, especially to industrial or commercial objectives. The other key concept 'progress' in this essay is defined as a steady improvement, as a society or civilization. I am arguing that the concept of technology does not ensure the concept of progress because there are certain technologies that have hurt society in various ways. Furthermore, not all technologies ensure progress.…

In the article “Is Humanity Getting Better?” written by Leif Wenar, the author discusses that the development of technology might have significant effect on our environment. There is a very significant relationship between scientific developments and the environment. The relationship between these two factors are like the butterfly effect in which one would highly effect the other. As an example, global warming and the greenhouse effect are two of the major environmental problems that exist in the world today. The main cause of this environment issues is caused by scientific development and the burning of the fossil fuels.…

If you were asked what the goal of science and research is, you would most likely respond that they exist for the benefit of the human population. However, this is not, and was not always the case. Taking a closer look at the history of science, particularly from the 1950s on, revels that things have not always been all well and good. It cannot be denied that the world of modern science is an ever-evolving realm that has experienced significant change over the past century, but just what has it evolved from? The answer to that question lies partly in the pages of Rebecca Skloot’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, a nonfiction account of her experiences with the Lacks family.…

Change in technology happens rapidly on a daily basis. As Schlesinger expresses, “The last two lifetimes have seen more scientific and technological achievement that the first 798 put together”(Schlesinger 41). Whether it deals with cars, travel, medicine, media, or a host of other topics, advancements in technology are occurring all around us. It is up to us whether to accept these changes or not. Many believe that change in technology is a hindrance, causing more problems than solutions. I believe technology has created a safer environment, revolutionized the way we look at different ideas, and resolved many economic problems in industries! In other words, change is inevitable and people should readily accept it.…

Technology plays an important role in the 21st century. Modern advancements have made human lives much easier. The hypothesis is that technology is one of the most important creations in the history of humanity. Computers and machine operators have allowed for the streamlining of both menial tasks, and exceedingly important jobs . Personal computers are capable of operations and calculations that are overly difficult if not impossible tasks for humans. Likewise, machines have been constructed to handle operations that impossible for human beings. Technology makes certain operations possible, and reduces the difficulty of others. One example is the Ultra Deep Feel imagery from the Hubble telescope, which has allowed for a rough estimation of how much time has passed since the first collision. Also, a large portion of the people alive today would never have survived birth-sans the aid of medical technology .…
