Scope Of Practice
Scope of practice is seen in multiple careers across many professions, but in healthcare; scope of practice is a critical element needed for patient safety. Scope of practice for medical laboratory technicians (MLTs) can be defined as: the practice of using medical laboratory technologies for investigations or studies on the human body, or on specimens collected from the body. This includes the evaluation of methodological sufficiency of the various studies performed along with the results they produce. These three functions are referred to as: scientific, managerial, and educational. Each function consists of a separate and specific scope of practice. Firstly, the scientific function requires an individual to produce test data as well as monitor the precision and accuracy of tests performed (known as quality control). In addition to that, individuals working under the scientific function are also required to interpret and correlate test data, and monitor the use of laboratory testing. Those working under the Managerial position have slightly different guidelines to adhere to. Managerial functions encompass all technical, fiscal, and human resources operations within the medical lab. Some examples of their tasks would include the ordering and storing of lab materials as well as the hiring of new MLTs. The managerial function, like the other two functions, is essential to the medical lab. Lastly, the educational function consists of the establishment and management of educational syllabi for new and current medical laboratory personnel. This could include educating at a two or four-year degree level as well as formulating continuing education requirements for current scientists and technicians. Setting a specific scope of practices for every position is crucial to the medical lab and patient
