(FL) Alright, but in all seriousness, I'm actually quite proud of Scout. She's come quite a long way from violence to curiosity, and even Calpurnia finds it admirable. It's almost like a metaphor for growing up. As she gains experience
This, in addition, proves that Scout can be unruly when she wants to be. Another great quote from Lee's story, to go along with…
Outside, the greens and browns run past me like dogs chasing cats as the tracks flew by like little birds. The train nosily rattles underneath my seat, rumbling along with the rocks. I am on train from Maycomb County back to Meridian, Mississippi. This summer’s been good to me in Maycomb. When I first arrived in Maycomb, it was a disappointment, all I found was boredom. Although, I changed my mind the day I met a funny-named boy who had soft brown hair and his sister, who lived in breeches. They were called, Jem and Scout from the loving Finch Family. The Finches consist of the couple, Atticus and his dead wife, their children, Jem and Scout along with Calpurnia who works for them.…
Looks like that old Maycomb prophet came true this year. Autumn turned to winter, and my house turned to ashes. It doesn’t bother me though, seeing as I do spend most of my time outdoors with my plants. In all honesty I was more worried about my plants than I was for myself when I woke up from the hellish flames. I knew my house was goner when I saw that the old Maycomb firetruck was taken out by the cold.…
(Calpurnia is seen cooking crackling bread in her kitchen, three portraits are seen sitting on the bench next to her. [one; her, Helen and Tom. Two; her, Jean, Jem and Atticus. Three; Her, Jem, Jean and their children]. She puts the crackling bread into the oven before picking up the first portrait with a thoughtful look)…
Mocking Bird Essay In the book The Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, there were many lessons taught to the protagonist Jean Louise aka Scout. It was a coming of a story showing the development of a young girl. Scout overcame many obstacles in her life and became an independent young woman. She made her own opinions on racism and did not use other opinions to persuade her.…
Another aid to Scout’s moral development is her sense of impulsive nature and sense of curiosity. She is always sticking her head where it shouldn’t be and as a result she learns about reality at a young age. When she confronts a group of men wanting to harm Tom Robinson, Scout doesn’t understand the situation at first, but “the full meaning of the night’s events hit [her] and [she begins] crying” (156).…

Rather, she prefers a boyish way of being, along with games, and fights. This is not expected of her in this society (Allegory). Since the death of her mother, it would seem that Scout lost touch with her society's expectations of her and would rather juggle from one corner to the other, eventually challenging dominant gender roles. (Lee, 51) However, she was not entirely spiteful towards her accomplices, but only debased those she felt owned a false demeanor, alike Aunt Alexandra. Together and with her friends, Alexandra looked down upon underprivileged, or black people, whom they considered ‘rubbish’ which made her embody the feelings inherent in the broader society. Indeed, this was their female role as expressed by Harper…
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird was written in 1960. The book takes place in a small Alabama town called Maycomb. Jem Finch is a young boy who matures throughout the story. He is submerged into a world of inequality and unfairness. Jem matures throughout the novel because of the experiences he went through; Tom Robinson’s case taught him inequality and how nothing is fair, Boo Radley taught Jem what is right and wrong, and he learned that Maycomb and the world around him is not fair or safe. Jem compares his life in Maycomb to a caterpillar inside of a cocoon. “It’s like bein’ a caterpillar in a cocoon, that’s what it is,” he said. “Like somethin’ asleep wrapped up in a warm place. I always thought Maycomb folks were the best folks in the world, least that’s what they seemed like.” (288).…
“Stand still, I said. ” I quickly ran towards Scout and took her hands and held them tight as I lashed out on her with force. Seeing her on top of Francis, punching him infuriated me to the point where I had lost it. “Stop it Scout! Why are you hitting Francis, are you out of your mind!”…
MAYCOMB – Yesterday Afternoon, a mad dog wandered its way into the streets of Maycomb. The dog was said to be walking lopsided and twitching. Neighbours watched as local lawyer Atticus Finch put the dog down.…
You quickly realize when reading To Kill a Mockingbird that Scout is who she is because of the way Atticus has raised her. While most girls scouts age would be wearing dresses and learning manners, Scout, thanks to Atticus’s parenting style, can decide for herself to wear overalls and learn to climb trees with Jem and Dill. She is very intelligent for her age as Atticus has taught her how to read before she even started school. Atticus builds his morals up in scout very evidently, although no so much as to draw attention. He speaks words of wisdom to them in their distress.…
