Situation
With more than 986 users, and only five IT administrators, Sealed Air, needed a solution that would leverage the technology of their wireless handheld devices and lower network downtime costs.
Evaluating the Solution
Sealed Air manages over 200 servers and 986 BlackBerry smartphones, with the number of BlackBerry users increasing each week. With such a vast network and a limited number of administrators, Sealed Air began to actively search for ways to remotely manage their servers from their BlackBerry smartphones. They were introduced to the Rove solution at the Research in Motion Wireless Enterprise Symposium 2006 by a Rove Sales Representative. Kerry Kinchen, an Electronic Communications Analyst with Sealed Air, downloaded the free trial from the Rove website and decided very quickly that this was the perfect tool for performing a full range of network management functions from anywhere, while improving his quality of life. “As soon as I started using Mobile Admin, the benefits were felt immediately. Within minutes of using Mobile Admin, I had instantly become free. No more 12 hours days at my desk!“ exclaimed Kinchen. Some of Mobile Admin’s immediate advantages for the company included a decrease in network downtime, optimized service levels and more satisfied users.

We proved that we had achieved a quick and measurable return on investment with accelerated response times and reduced network downtime costs from the usage of Mobile Admin
Increasing Flexibility for IT Staff
With the ability to manage an entire IT infrastructure from a handheld device, Mobile Admin has given IT administrators a much appreciated increase in productivity and efficiency. Before Mobile Admin was in place, any network problem would trigger a call to an IT administrator for support. If the IT person on duty was not at their desk, didn’t have their laptop with them, or had to drive into the office from home, there could be long delays – creating a work stoppage. Now, when the Help Desk contacts IT administrators, they can reset passwords, disable devices and unlock accounts from wherever they are using their wireless handheld device. “It’s not only better service for our users, it’s a real quality of life issue,” says Kinchen. “I can be out to dinner with my family or at the supermarket and reboot a server. In one instance, an IT administrator was able to reset a password while jogging.”
Approval
“We proved that we had achieved a quick and measurable return on investment with accelerated response times and reduced network downtime costs from the usage of Mobile Admin. Not to mention the gain of 4 additional man-hours per day, reducing the work day from 12 hours to 8 hours. Management loved it!” says Kinchen.
Reaction to Mobile Admin 4.0
Kinchen is also impressed with Mobile Admin 4.0 which allows a user to manage an unlimited number of servers with only one license. “Mobile Admin 4.0 is light years ahead of 3.3. The web interface is smoother, the console is smoother. It just works”.

The primary problem for sealed air was their overzealous product focus with a lack of consumer focus. Sealed Air was practically the sole maker of air cap cushioning with virtually no competitors. Their competitors were selling uncoated bubbles at half the price and starting to grab market share in Europe and the U.S. Sealed Air was too concerned with their “saran barrier coating” which caused product myopia. Having the most innovative product in the industry is great but if consumers only need a cheaper product that efficiently gets the job done than there is a disconnect between the company and the buyer. They neglected to understand what their consumers actually wanted and needed in packaging. Sealed Air prided themselves on their technologically advanced problem-solving sales force. However, this sales force failed to understand what their distributors actually wanted. The distributors were left with minimal product options along with stringent pricing by Sealed Air.…

“Forrester Research reported in July of 2011 that nearly 60 percent of companies allow employees to use personal devices for work. “Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)” policies allow employees maximum choice and flexibility but raise new challenges in maintaining the personal privacy of the user, managing and securing valuable corporate information assets, and providing IT with an unpredictable and inconsistent mobile environment. There are also mobile technology considerations, while mobile devices are surpassing PCs and laptops as a user’s primary computing platform, they do have limited access to power, network and hardware resources. Organizations that do not have IT oversight managing its employees’ mobile devices unintentionally consent to making their assets vulnerable to attack from uninformed user behaviors like improper configuration and risky wireless connections (Search Consumerization). With the mobile market’s flux state adding new emerging technologies rapidly, companies have had to adjust from having their networks only accommodate few devices. Initially, laptops accessed the network through limited VPN concentrators and desktops provided access points for PDAs through synchronization. With new technologies, single devices now may encase several forms of connections: Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth, and 3G. Networks now accommodate off-site users through a myriad of application portals and on-site users connected through Wi-Fi accessibility and Bluetooth-enabled desktops. Each connection form provides a unique opportunity for attack. Under BYOD policies, corporations must institute a comprehensive mobile inventory that they manage device discovery. New technological circumstances create scenarios that single devices utilize several connections and individual employees possess many devices of which they may utilize concurrently.…
