Thornton is a very decisive man. In many scenes throughout the movie he displays a very distinct character trait. He is determined to get what he wants. For example, Thornton wants with all of his heart for the fiery Mary Kate Danaher to be his wife. Some examples of this culture shock would be when Thornton touched the holy water and then touched Mary Kate Danaher’s hand. This was seen as rude. Secondly, Thornton also struggles with understanding marriage. For instance, when Mr. Danaher didn’t approve for Mary Kate to marry Thornton asked why she couldn’t just come for herself. But soon after Michaleen Oge Flynn quickly says “she can’t marry without her brother’s consent. She couldn’t and she wouldn’t”. These are just a few of the problems Thornton experienced whilst in Innisfree. Finally, Thornton had a very dark past that he seldom brought up.
