Or have you ever though if wearing your seat belt would make a different outcome? Wearing a seatbelt drastically increases ones chance of surviving a car crash. the wearing of seatbelts as an urgent priority. Still there are hardcore drivers who think they are invincible or beyond the law. This means there are Americans who are taking there lives in their hands each day. The behavior and disregard for there own safety is costing us all.
When I was a freshman in high school my dad got into a terrible accident that cost him his memory, the doctors told us that if he was in fact wearing his seatbelt it would of made his injuries drastically smaller. Over the past 4 years his memory has slowly recovered, but he still can’t remember everything, and even now he forgets things and our family needs to remind him. This is just one personal occurrence that has happen due to not wearing a seatbelt, there are millions of occurrences that have lead to tragedies, obstacles, or problems with family or loved ones.
A seatbelt is a harness in car, it straps across the body and buckles at the opposite hip. It is meant to protect the passenger from injury in the event of an accident. Most people believe that strict seatbelt laws infringe upon their rights to choose not to wear a seatbelt. They believe that it is one way that the government is trying to control them. People say seatbelts should be a choice due to various reasons such as getting trapped in a burning vehicle. Many people keep a magnetic seatbelt cutter incase this was to happen. Some passengers find seatbelts to be uncomfortable because they lay across they body in an awkward position. Due to this they choose not to wear the seatbelt wearing a seatbelt has saved thousands of lives and could have saved many more if those people would have simply buckled up. Although it can happen it is rare for a seatbelt to get stuck.
Police officers ask when one is involved in an automobile accident whether or not a seatbelt was used. Every person in a vehicle should be wearing a seatbelt whether they are traveling one mile or one thousand miles. It has been proven time and time again that safety belts protect from ejection from the vehicle. Many people choose not to wear their seatbelts, and think that it is safer to not wear one. Maybe nothing will ever happen to the people that wear one, but for the unfortunate people that get into an accident hopefully a safety belt will help.
We have all heard the excuse before: “its uncomfortable”, “I’m only going around the corner.” “Id rather be thrown out a car than stuck in the seatbelt harness” or my personal favorite “I’m a good driver, I don’t need to wear one.” Well one may be a good driver, but there are situations beyond ones control such as bad weather, road conditions, and not to mentions the other drivers that may not drive as well as others. Seatbelts can mean the difference between life and death. Wearing a seatbelt every time you enter a motor vehicle is not only the smarter thing to, but it is the right thing to do because it saves lives, it’s the law and it saves you from having to pay infractions.
According to the national highway traffic and safety administration (NHTSA) seatbelts saved nearly twelve thousand lives in the United States in the year 2000. The NHTSA estimates that more than nine thousand united state car accident fatalities in the year 2000 would have been avoided if the victims had been wearing a seatbelt. Sixty-three percent of people killed in accidents were not wearing seatbelts. The NHTSA also stated that seatbelts reduce the risk of death for a front seat car occupant, by about forty-five percent. For the people who use that excuse “they are just going around the corner” should realize that eighty percent of traffic fatalities occur within a twenty-five mile radius of ones home and at a speed of forty miles an hour. Buckling up to a drive around the block is probably the best time to do so. Everyone knows that car crashes can cause death; yet because people do not buckle up all the time. Thousands of people still get in accidents everyday.
In conclusion although seatbelts can be a pain and uncomfortable and people may think they are not needed for short simple drives a numerous amount of people and statistics show one has a better chance at surviving a fetal accident with the safety belt buckled and fastened correctly then one would have without. I can see why one would not want to wear a seatbelt, but the risks are much lower if you just buckle up.
