The main reason the South wanted to secede was to become independent. Southerners did not want to get rid of slavery because it was critical to the southern economy. The Election of 1860 was another reason the South wanted to secede because Southerners were afraid that President Lincoln would abolish or get rid of slavery in the South. Sectionalism was another problem because the South had made their needs or desires more important than the Union itself.…

The Secession and Ft. Sumter involved the South, North, South Carolina, and Fort Sumter and it affected the North, South, the Union, and South Carolina. The South seceded from the Union after the Election of 1860. They felt that they had no representation in the government once Lincoln became the President. The Southern territories consolidated and formed the “Confederate States of America” . To wholly transform the states in the Confederacy, the South captured Fort Sumter which was being controlled by Robert Anderson, a former slave owner. This was the first act of aggression in the Civil War. The North did not want to begin a Civil War with the South. Once, the North learned about the South’s bombardment of Fort Sumter, they were ambitious…
Several southern states formed the Confederate States of America as a rival nation in response of the attempt to set slaves free, which led to the American Civil War between the North and South. After years of turmoil, the North eventually defeated the South when the Confederate forces surrendered on April 9, 1865. This war was a period of unrest and division in America, but Abraham Lincoln was able to lead the country back into unity with his…
South Carolina's Secession was one way that the civil war had been started. On December 20, 1860, South Carolina voted to secede from the Union because they did not trust the republican party to keep slavery alive. In other states, leaders debated the question of secession. Meanwhile, members of Congress tried to find ways to prevent it.…
South Carolina was the first state to request to leave the union. Consequently, more southern states followed their act within the next weeks to come. The southern states did not wish to be part of a country in which they had no authority. The deep south came together to form the Confederate States of America. Abraham Lincoln tried to compromise…
On April 12, 1861, the Civil War began and it ended on May 9, 1865. The Union states were California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Maine, Michigan, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Wisconsin, New York, Ohio, Oregon, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Kansas, and Kentucky. The CSA (Confederate States of America) were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The Confederacy seceded from the Union due to grievances such as states rights and slavery. The Union wanted the Confederacy to stay in union.…
The Texas Declaration of Secession discusses the different reasons why Texas decided to succeed from the Union and side with the Confederacy. Texas cited the main reasons to be the promotion of welfare, insurance of domestic tranquility and security of blessings of peace and liberty of their residents. Due to differences of beliefs in politics, especially slavery between the Northern and Southern states, Texas realized their ideals sided with the Confederacy thus leading to the separation from the Northern states. Texas believed that with joining the Confederacy their best interests would be protected which included protection from their boarding country, Mexico.…
Today everyone says the reason the South left the Union was; Slavery. Slavery was not the only factor that led the South to secede. In fact, some of the wealthiest slaveholders opposed secession. They believed, for good reason, that slavery would actually be safer in the Union than out of it. Most people aren’t aware that, even as president, Lincoln supported a proposed constitutional amendment that would have guaranteed slavery’s continuation forever. Lincoln mentioned his support for this amendment in his first inaugural address. Another factor that led to the South seceding was the way the North Republicans and the way they voiced their feelings towards the south. I believe the North would have put up a protest towards the South, but nothing as big and bloody and unnecessary as what initially ended up happening between the states.…
This paper sets out to define or shed some light on the possible reasons of the separation of Confederate states from the Union. The North believed the highest power belonged to the federal government while the South believed that each state governed itself, and the question of slavery should be decided by the states not by the federal government. By examining these two points we may be able to get a clear understanding of popular opinions and mindsets that would cause a nation to war against itself. With the election of Abraham Lincoln on November 6, 1860 South Carolina saw the only recourse was to secede from the…
Yes, the lower South should be able to secede peacefully. As a Southern Democrat, I believe that it is not only the right of the lower South states to secede, but secession is needed now. This secession is very important to the development of the lower South. The Constitution gives states’ rights, and just because the lower South is not in 100% agreement with the Northern states, that does not mean that our rights can be taken away (page 336 in our book). Now, let’s fast forward to President Taylor’s plan to allow California and New Mexico to choose if they want to be a slave state or a free state (page 635 of our assigned readings).…
However the election of Abraham Lincoln was not the only reason for secession, but a rather a series of rooted problems. Sectional tensions between northern and southern states arose as early as the 1840s when America first began its westward expansion into new territories. Every new territory added raised the question of its position on slavery, as the balance between free and slave states was fragile. In an attempt to gain supporters and appeal to both citizens from the north and south, Douglas introduced the idea of popular sovereignty i n which the citizens of the territory would choose whether it entered the Union pro-slavery or anti-slavery. While this may have seemed like a good idea at the time, it did not prove to be so good in Kansas.…
After the American Revolution, there was only a few events that shook the whole country. However, on December 20, 1860, South Carolina declared its secession from the United States. This event shocked everyone in the country and some of the foreign countries could not even believe this news. South Carolina was part of the Southern States who greatly supported slavery to be instituted everywhere and not be abolished. So, when there were anti-slavery movements that occurred in the country, South Carolina decided to secede from the United States and became its own separate state. South Carolina even wrote its own Declaration of Independence stating the philosophies that is believed in that state only. Since then, many people have argued that when South Carolina did secede from the country, they committed treason. More specifically, the reasons why many people have considered South Carolina as a traitor is because it appointed its own president, developed its own military army, and created its own flag.…

Even today 150 years after the civil war scholars that study the era of American history often disagree about the specific causes that led to the beginning of the civil war. However, there are generally five causes that resulted in the southern states seceding from the Union and triggering the American Civil War. Those five causes are the following slavery, states’ rights, sectionalism, territorial crisis, and national elections. I am going to focus on two of the five causes, slavery and sectionalism. Sectionalism it involves this idea that you have competing interests that have different economies, social structures, different customs, and political values.…
