If you asked a Champion or a Winner if they would be happy to just take part in an event or tournament, it wouldn't take long to realise that to these Champions its much more than just taking part, to them it is the Winning that counts!
In Sport people remember the winners, nobody remembers who was the runner up or who came second, a great example of this is who was the first person to break the 4-minute mile? most people know it was Roger Bannister. Those youngsters who get the so called 'bug' for competition in a chosen sport may develop through coaching, dedication and hard work, and progress to a high standard and may even decide that they would like to make a career from their sport, this is when sacrifices and commitment are required. In some Countries, children start sports at a very early age in order to give them the best chance to get them to the top of their sport and become champions. In the UK the idea of competition, winning and having youngsters work hard has been frowned upon, but things are slowly changing and now sports and competition are being encouraged, this is bringing better results overall from Rugby,
