Totalitarian governments in the early twentieth century had three basic characteristics. First characteristic was the country was ruled by a single ruler with unrestricted power. Also the leader or party used violence and scare tactics to keep up power. Because of this many people were scared of there leaders and were against their decisions. Lastly the people were not given political freedoms, and dissension was not allowed(P.K.). If anyone ever announced to their leader that they disagreed with their decisions they would get hurt in many different ways, but to many people were scared of the military power. In nineteen thirty-six , Hitler dropped out of the treaty and started to rearm Germany with no regard for what the treaty had said. Hitler wanted full power so he would do what he had to get full power. If the French and British stood up to Hitler at that time, they would not allow him to rearm. The Treaty of Versailles said Germany could not have military troops or installations in a region of Germany called the Rhineland(Unit 5 Lesson 6“The Rise of Hitler and the Policy of Appeasement”). In 1936, Hitler put troops in that area. Again, if the French and British had confronted Hitler it would have stopped him.Additionally, Hitler would have lost his ability to build his military power(Unit 5 Lesson 6 “The Policy of
