Security Threats in Prison
As I am sure you are aware, there are security threats in prisons, just like there are anywhere else. The biggest threat in prisons right now are the presence of several gangs. The majority of these gangs are one race & are extremely violent. Several of these gangs target young kids in high school, middle school, and even elementary school. The first major gang whose presence in prisons is a high security threat is the Mara Salvatrucha; also known as the MS-13. MS-13 had originated in Los Angeles, California. They then formed their own gang as a retaliation against the Mexican-American gangs that were already formed here. They chose their name by combining La Mara which was an extremely violent gang in El Salvador at the time, and Salvatruchas. There were trained guerilla fighters among the Salvadorians in the gang. The 13 was added to pay respect to the California prison gang, Mexican Mafia. MS-13 has about 26,000 gang members. This gang has members in 42 states and the District of Columbia. The members are slowly moving down to the Southeast which is causing a high level of crimes in that region. The current threat from the MS-13 is in the Northeastern and Western parts of the United States. According to the FBI website, MS-13 is expanding at a moderate rate due to recruitment and the current gang members are migrating to other regions of the United States in order to be closer to family or different jobs and are starting up new “cliques” in the area that they move into. The Folk Nation was formed November 11, 1978 inside of the Illinois Department of Corrections. The chairman of the Gangster Disciple Nation, Larry Hoover, decided that they needed an alliance and encouraged many leaders of Black, Hispanic, White gangs from Chicago to join the alliance. Their largest rival is the People Nation, which was formed shortly after the Folk Nation. In order to be known as the Folk Nation, they typically tilt clothing such as hats, belt buckles, etc. to the right. This gang is geographically strongest in the Illinois Prisons. This is a very mixed racial gang which includes, Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, but is predominately male. The majority of gang members are in their early teens to late twenties. They have a set Code of Conduct which includes the terms: All is all, all is well, I will not let my brother fall to a knee, etc. This specific gang is also very active in sneaking contraband into correctional facilities.
