Individuals have different behaviors that create ideas, hobbies, dreams, and ambitions that people aspire to fulfill in their lives. Decisions that we make as individuals are determined by various factors we encounter as we live. Those factors are sometimes situational, or long term and have great impacts in our lives. The ability to decide on how to control ourselves, and our lives differ from an individual to another. This essay is addressing the ways in which we make decisions. In contrast, individuals who operate primarily within the prevention focus theory are those who live their lives as expected to, by rules or procedures set by others, even when they do not want to do so. They do not deviate from the set of rules, or procedures to avoid failures, or punishments. David Sedaris is an American humor writer of the work “In the waiting room” who sets an example of how we choose to operate within Kark and Van Dijk regulatory focus theories, through his work he explains his life experiences, when he first went to Paris and could not speak French, takes a French school but then gives up. David Sedaris experienced difficulties in adopting a new language and decided to take the easy way out. In this case people need to be sure of their wants or needs in their lives, before making decisions. For those who seek changes and cannot stop at anything unless it is what they want, can definitely not operate under prevention focus theory, since prevention limits one’s abilities to achieve a certain expectation, and puts a pattern lifestyle for an individual to follow while promotion focus gives room for individuals to learn and think of ways to reach their goals hence creativity, and skills emerge within them.
