Sedia Gestaoria Francis Bacon Analysis
Even though the pope is sitting on a what viewers usually think is a sedia gestatoria, it does not appear that way. Bacon painted the sedia gestatoria slightly overlapping the pope which made the pope appear kind of hemmed in. The effect is greatly enhanced because it is thick lines of yellow. We associate yellow as light, which lead viewers to believe he is in an electric chair. And then on top of all that you've got these vertical stripes, almost very thinly painted, which seem to hold captive of the pope, similar to a prison. These parallel light and dark striation has feature in Bacon’s paintings many times. Propaganda imagery of the Nazi ‘cathedral of light’ is possible model Bacon has used as a reference for those vertical stripes.

    The church was funded and oversaw by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese who chose Vignola as the designer. The Vignola's design utilizes a Latin-Crossed plan with a single aisle. Above, there is a broad nave with a shallow transept, below are coupled corinthian columns with lowered arcades. The arcades are shallow to not distract from the line of entablature and attic decorations toward the altar.4 On either side of the nave there are three interconnected chapels, with two additional chapels on the sides of the apes.     The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is simply breathtaking. From the exterior to the interior of the cathedral, you can find plentiful amounts of highly sophisticated bodies of work. Before laying a foot inside, the massive bronze doors containing forty-eight relief panels depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament catches the eyes of many. Also, many note the exquisite statues and carvings of saints and Jesus all along the Western Front of the Cathedral. Once inside, the enormous pilier-cantonnés stand along the nave aisle, where it erects up into the ceiling. Eventually, the columns meet with one another at four angles, creating a quadripartite vault in the nave ceiling. The stained glass windows that lines the entire cathedral strikes your retina at all different angles as you rotate your body. A little beyond the crossing, the high altar contains a magnificent cross, as well as an iron tomb of the man who founded the cathedral. If you focus the eyes just behind the choir, you will glare at seven stunning radial chapels—each one representing an apostle, a patron, or immigrant.     Francis Bacon examines the benefits and effects of studies, maintaining that when studies are balanced by experience, diverse studies may help counteract personal imperfections. Bacon proposes that study may be done for three purposes: for one’s own entertainment, such as reading book on a favorite author, to impress others and bring attention to oneself. Too much study may be considered a downfall, as the individual studying may be considered by others to be self-indulgent or even lazy if they appear to be studying and not much else. Just to do what books tell you to do and nothing else is characteristic of an academic/bookish individual.
