Effect of pH on germination of seeds: Design Practical
Introduction: The term pH stands for Hydrogen Potential it is used to determine the acidity of a substance. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14. The values that are smaller than 7 indicate the range of acidity. Higher pH values are alkaline and a pH of 7 is neutral. Acidity is a function of the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+), or protons. The strength of alkaline solutions is measured by the concentration of hydroxide ions (OH-).
Germination starts when a seed is provided with water and a appropriate temperature. There are many factors that are essential for a successful germination process like salinity, temperature, oxygen, light, and altitude and soil/water pH. These factors are responsible for a successful plant growth. Light energy is the primary source of energy in all ecosystems. This energy is used by plants (which contain chlorophyll) during the process of photosynthesis; a process during which plants manufacture organic substances by combining inorganic substances they play an important role in plants.
Aim: The purpose of this experiment is to determine the effect of pH in the germination of seeds. Using bean seeds that will receive each day water with five different pH’s which one is more beneficiary for the germination period of the bean.
Hypothesis: Seeds are living organisms, by altering the pH rate of the water they will receive daily, the waters that contain a pH greater than seven (alkaline) will eventually affect the growth of beans during their germination period, some will not be able to even germinate and other will take longer. While with the water with a pH lower than four (acidic) will be able to germinate properly, but the ideal pH rate for a seed to germinate is 0 (pure water) since there’s no acid or alkaline substances that may damage the seed.
