INTRODUCTION
I. Before you ate breakfast this morning did it even cross your mind what you were eating, or where it come from?
II. If you had cereal, milk, or toast, and bought them in a traditional grocery store, it is almost certain you had a genetically modified food today.
III. I just recently became interested in genetically modified foods and have started researching them.
IV. Today I will be telling you what they are, how they have impacted me, and the …show more content…
According to Merriam- Webster A genetically modified organism or (GMO) “Is an organism whose genome has been altered in order to favour the expression of desired physiological traits or the output of desired biological products”
A. This means foods have been inserted with foreign genes into their DNA using biological engineering.
1. The reason for this is to enhance the product and improve industry efficiency.
2. In other words they want it faster, fatter, bigger, cheaper.
B. One example would be 1. Chickens being genetically engineered 2. From 1950 to 2008 chickens have tripled in size. At 5 and half weeks a normal chicken would be 940grams however the one injected is 2,900 grams.
C. So what is the problem with eating a supersized chicken? 1. This is like a very real modern day “Frankenstein Monster” 2. However unlike the monster Mary Shelly constructed. It isn’t visibly grotesque or scary but something unseen ingested by billions of unaware consumers everyday.
Transition
Now that you know what they are, I will be sharing my experiences with GM foods vs. organic foods.
II. Personal example

There are also many risks
1. Provoke allergic reactions
2. Contribute to the decline of biodiversity
3. Development of super weeds or super bugs
4. Additional costs of labeling weather foods are GMOs or not, may increase the price of foods.
5. The overall health concerns to both the animals being injected and to us consuming the crops and animals.

CONCLUSION
I. Hopefully now you have a better understanding of what GM foods are, the impacts they had on me, and how they affect our society.
II. The debate continues weather GM foods are beneficial or hurtful, and it is ultimately your own decision but I hope you are more informed on genetically modified foods.
