I walked outside and it was hot vs. I took a leap outside into the sun that blazed down on me it felt like I was wearing millions of winter coats. Which one help you visualize which is happening better? The book I'm reading which is "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld used a lot of figurative language throughout this story. For an example on page 238 it states, "it just felt flat, like a song she'd heard to many time." By using a simile it helped me understand what she meant by flat. If that simile wasn't there I could of though it meant deflated or flat like a pancake. To add on, using figurative language makes the book more clear and it allows the book to continue with a flow. As you can see, the book I chose to read "Uglies" contains figurative…

James Maloney’s novel A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove is beautifully crafted and achingly honest exploration of the transformative power of love. Maloney uses language techniques, such as imagery, characterisation, symbolism, themes and figurative language. This entices the reader into, positions them to feel and think ways about the characters and is given to inform the reader about the character. In ABTWC Maloney has used unconditional love to express the characters inner thoughts. He uses this to meticulously craft abstruse themes and characterisations. The Ways he has shown how transformative love is through points mentioned before and through the different forms of love (conditional and unconditional). I will present ways…
Edith Wharton quite deliberately brings together human emotion and the environment in her novella Ethan Frome. The characters are circumscribed by the environment in which they exist and the impossibility of escape from the environmental forces of nature, heredity and place shape the characters of the text. A moment of hope arises as Mattie and Ethan walk home together from the dance and a more romantic sense of possibility emerges. The reader is drawn to the love of Ethan and Mattie quite subtly – it grows almost organically from innocent moments shared and this is perhaps why the reader does not see their ‘affair’ as adulterous. We share the hope that glimmers in the bleak cold that is Starkfield and its characters.…
In Into Thin Air by Jon Krakaeur, the author’s word choice of descriptive passages and vivid words help well understand his perspective. You see this whole story is written in perspective Jon Krakauer is a journalist by trade, and his motive for going on the Everest expedition is to write an article about the experience of climbing as part of a commercial expedition. The perspective is in the first person, but with a journalistic viewpoint. Krakauer often seems removed from the subject, describing events as objectively as possible, as one would expect in a journalistic article. For example, he is sometimes critical of his fellow climbers, even though elsewhere he describes…

In the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon, I interpret the main character Christopher as contradictory. He is shown to be a really smart kid, but he’s also pretty clueless in other subjects. He’s a really nice kid, but he can be really rude and insensitive. Lastly, he can come off as being really mature – and he does act like it – but he is actually really immature at times.…
Aristocratic marriage and family during the mid-Heian period was very different than the traditional marriage that we are accustomed to today. The Gossamer Years is a diary about an aristocratic marriage of a mid-Heian Fujiwara noblewoman known today as “ the mother of Michitsuna ” and her unhappy marriage with her kinsman, Fujiwara Kaneie. The Gossamer Years shows how the process of getting married was different back then and how family was close between the wife and her mother and father, but as not close between the wife, her husband, and their children. These customs today would not be accepted in today’s society around the world.…
