#1: Shaun is a huge college football fan. In the past, he has always bought football tickets on the street from ticket scalpers. This year, he decided to join the university 's ticket program, which requires a $2,000 contribution to the university for the “right” to purchase tickets. Shaun will then pay $400 per season ticket. Shaun understands that the price paid for the season tickets is not tax deductible as a charitable contribution. However, contributions to a university are typically tax deductible.…

The first article I read was called “Plutocrats Despising the Poor: An American Tradition.” A part of the article talks about how millionaires and billionaires are basically telling the middle class and poor should just suck it up and that the 99 percent should stop “envying” the rich and start “emulating” them. Also that we should be glad we don’t live in China or India where people are making 30,00 and in my opinion even people in America only make that much for example some teachers only make 40,000 a year and that’s with a four year degree. As quoted in the article “And most of all they should stop annoying their "betters" with demands for "handouts" like unemployment insurance, food stamps, and other "entitlements." They also talk about how we're forced to endure over the public airwaves the whining and moaning of billionaires and millionaires who believe working people are not bending at the knee to them enough or doing so without the level of devotion. In January Tom Perkins sent a letter into the wall street journal comparing working people’s concern about inequality to the Nazis singling out the Jews for persecution at the time of Kristallnacht, but later did he take back that statement but he did stay true to the message he was trying to send out although Sam Zell did agree with his statement and had defended Perkins. The second article is called “If Obama is such a socialist, then why are government jobs disappearing?” Throughout the past four years Obama has created roughly 8.5 million dollars yet well the labor market has turned around public employment has decreased. “For all the talk on the right about how President Obama is a closet socialist bent on ballooning the government, jobs at the state, local, and federal levels have steadily dried up since Obama took office.” So this leads to the question what is happening and why hasn’t Obama done anything to fix this issue at hand. The article also talks about how public sector employment has fallen…

    The Illusion of Happiness

Some say that happiness is just an illusion. It is an abstract word that is too fleeting and many say that no one can find ‘true happiness’ without it being a trick of the senses and the mind and, in other words, an illusion. True happiness is often defined as satisfaction, contentment, and acceptance. But what comes after the feeling of contentment?…

“If we are not happy there is something wrong with us”, says Chris Hedges, author of the article The Illusion of Happiness. This way of thinking might be the reason why there is such a big infatuation around psychology. Or, positive psychology might simply be a figment created by psychologists in a purely lucrative goal. Through his paper, Chris Hedges tries to demystify the mystery around positive psychology and strongly demonstrates how it is used to brainwash employees and deflect attention away from the goals and structures of corporations. This paper will provide a short summary of the article of Hedges and a short response about it.…

An investment in real estate is widely regarded as one of the best investments one can make. The notion that home prices will always rise is as strong as it is incorrect and in the early 2000’s this line of speculative thought led to a level of irrational exuberance that threatened to topple the U.S. economy and its financial system.…

Strength. No, not meaning muscle strength, but strength in the mind- your mental capability of overcoming obstacles in your life that has brought you down and made you think that you cannot get back up. Benjamin Franklin once said, “The Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.” No one can hand you happiness on a silver platter; you have to obtain it yourself and that comes from how strong you are to pick yourself up from disasters that occur in your life.…
